Is there a program to monitor multiple machines?

Hi,
I am migrating my machines from Grid.org to WCG and wonder if there is a program that will let me monitor multiple machines' progress.
I know there was an unsupported program to monitor progress at UD, ( http://www.users.totalise.co.uk/~Jonathan.Murphy/index.htm ) but haven't seen anything similar in the threads on this forum.

Re: Is there a program to monitor multiple machines?

Hi coolstream

Welcome to the WCG. I am sure you will like it here; there are lots of exciting things coming down the pike that people have been asking for.

If you are running Windows, there is a WCG version of UDMon available and it, when installed apears to be identical to the Grid.org version.

Neither version of it monitors multiple machines but it allows for cacheing work units on a single machine.

vaio, an advanced member says "The only real difference (if you have used it before with ud) is that you start it by running the WCG batch file that you will find in the ud mon folder."

More information here:
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=478

and the UDMon homepage at:
http://udmon.sourceforge.net/

In the future there should be some other solutions in windows. If you would like to run Linux, some of that capability is resident in its agent (BOINC). In BOINC, you can monitor multiple machines which is not the case with udmon. BOINC may (stress may) be available in windows in the future; as it is under consideration.

Again Welcome to the WCG! smile

Re: Is there a program to monitor multiple machines?

Thanks for your prompt reply and welcome! cool

I never did get round to evaluating UDMon, but may well do so in the future..

I will definitely take a look at BOINC though and keep my fingers crossed that someday soon, a Windows version will exist!

i'll check it out, it seems as if it can still be used as the monitor focus' on the UD agent, so as long as you are running the UD agent, which windows users of WCG will be, then it should be fine...

I've never heard anybody mention this software before, thank-you for telling me abecause if it works for me then it shoudl save me some time in checking rigs to see if they are still up.

wink

Re: Is there a program to monitor multiple machines?

Fingers crossed peace

The monitor certainly works without fail on the UD agent.

In fact, I am using it at the moment to notify me when each machine completes a WU so that I can migrate the machine over to WCG.

If you do manage to investigate it, the only 'bug' I can see is that since the last db failure at UD, there are inconsistencies between the 'official' and 'reported' totals. This is due to the fact that the results are derived from different dbs.

There probably wouldn't be a similar problem with WCG data. confused

Re: Is there a program to monitor multiple machines?

I must admit to knowing something about this program wink

It's 'offically' caled UD Network Monitor, url is

For now, the bad news is, (Comp) - it won't work against the WCG Agent, as variables are mapped differently.

The Good news is, I've worked out the new mappings and have been running it happily for the last few months...

However... I rather stupidly embarked on a complete redesign of it, making it web services based. It works, but it's not pretty - yet. If there is sufficient demand I'll try and find the time to finish it off, but it's a huge undertaking. I may just release a WCG Agent as an interim step, to use against the existing (UD) monitor....

Jonathan.

Re: Is there a program to monitor multiple machines?

Hi Jonathan,

Great to hear from you again!

I knew you were working on a 2nd version of the program with web-based improvements, which I would still like to see come to fruition at some time.

In the interim, I would really welcome a WCG version of the agent which served me so well with the UD program. I think many others would also welcome a program like this because it is just so darned useful to anyone running more than one machine in different locations!

It has become a daily ritual to have my morning coffee and check on my machines without having to move to different areas of the house, and as I migrate each machine from UD to WCG, I am de-installing the Agent and hoping to have an agent for WCG soon.

I'm so glad you spotted this post and hope it inspires you to release a WCG Agent soon.

>comp_interrlz
Sorry for the false alarm. As Jonathan says, the program is geared towards the UD version. I knew this already, but perhaps didn't make it 100% clear when I inquired about a WCG version.
BTW, if you still have .NET framework installed, be sure that you have upgraded it to the latest SP version for reasons of system security!

Jonathan - are you still going to develop a WCG monitor?

Does anyone else have any suggestions for monitoring multiple windows WCG agents on a network? Here is my conundrum:

I am a sys admin and have WCG installed on about 30 computers and UD installed on about 70 computers. One of the very few reasons I keep UD is b/c I can use UD Network Monitor to see if one of the users has switched off the screensaver. I don't know of any way to monitor the WCG agents though? (Personally, I can't fathom why anyone would switch to something "pretty" rather than help crunch - but the computers are not their property anyway).

I know there is a BOINC network agent which can monitor BOINC clients, but (and I know I'm going to get yelled at for saying this) BOINC doesn't have a cool screensaver for any of the projects (that I'm aware of?). I can keep the users' (some, at least) interest if there is a cool screensaver.

Does anyone have any suggestions? (or free ways/programs to restrict Windows XP modifications - I also tried deleting all other default WinXP screensavers but they keep coming back)?

confused
