angry I guess I just don't get it...

I have agents running on two computers, 24x7.

One computer has one 900 Mhz PIII with 604M of ram, it averages 1 or 2 results a day, and has returned 396 results for 176,361 points. This is around 445 points per result.

The other computer has dual 3.0 Ghz Xeons with 2 GB of ram, it averages 5 or 6 results a day, and has returned 578 results for 95403 points. This is around 165 points per result.

Is this how the scoring is supposed to work? If so, I may as well take the more powerful machine off the net. It is a waste of time to run it and may be a waste of time to run either.

I know, don't let the door hit me on the way out angry

Re: I guess I just don't get it...

Run time and points scoring is based on effort, to give some consideration for slow machines. Anyone that can contribute will help in a small way. Those little runs add up. My slowest one, a Pentium III/500, takes about 4 days to compute a result, but gets 1000 or 2000 points. An even slower one took 8 to 13 days per result and got 3000 to 4000 points each, but is now not ready for prime time, and is offline.

My two fastest machines are a 2.2MHz AMD64 3400+ and a 2.4MHz AMD64 4000+. They send in about 8 results per day, each. The fastest computation I've seen gave me 48 points, and it completed in 1 hour, 15 minutes.

I have about 30 devices set up on each one with UDMonitor. That gives me 5-7 days of processing time without a connect, before I run out. That allows me to continue crunching if the servers are offline, which happens now and then. I can also be out of town for a little while, if need be. Normally I connect about twice per day and send in 2-4 results from each computer.

Don't think about points....think about results. We're getting something done faster. Isn't that what we want?

Go out there and join a team. There's no penalty for member results, and you pool your statistics with others. You could be generating individual statistics and team statistics for the same result. We need all the help we can get.

See the team recruiting area.

got'ta go.... 3 more results waiting to send in.

geopatr3,

The work that is handed out for the Human Proteome Folding project is non-deterministic. That means that one workunit could complete in 90 minutes while another workunit could take 90 hours. This makes comparing points earned per result not the best measure of your computers point earning potential.

If you take a look at points earned per hour, then you will see that your slower machine is earning 22.7 points/hour. Your more powerful machines is earning 35.3 points/hour. (I looked your devices up in the database to see how much run time they had)

You may find that attitude at some other places but not at WCG as indicated by the above responses. We are glad to have you here and appreciate your contributions. smile
