Information Organization

I really hope that it is not too much to ask for Krembil to post information about specific projects in the forum for that project. The information provided is very disorganized with threads that were started over a month ago under News still being updated. I don't know where to look for information on why my crunchers are running dry today or when a particular project is planned to restart.

If the project forums are not going to be used to provide information about a project, lets just lock them all and all new posts can go randomly under one of the periodic (certainly not weekly) News threads.

Cheers coffee

Re: Information Organization

I agree. The information which is given to the volunteers is spotty at best. It only takes a couple of minutes for someone(Cyclops, any scientist, project manager, etc ????) to put together an update of a few sentences, which really should happen at least daily. Even if it is simply one line which might say "No news today, all systems are functioning properly."
Otherwise it sometimes feels like the volunteers are being treated like mushrooms i.e. kept in the dark and and fed ..........
I will let the various project personnel speculate on the future viability of their projects without the volunteers. Remember, we are interested, that is why many of us are here.

Cheers

Hi NixChix, thanks for the feedback! We will definitely keep these suggestions in mind when we periodically reorganize the forums.

Re: Information Organization

I'd do my own unofficial more frequent updates, but there really isn't much to say.
MCM is the only project currently running with any serious amount of WUs at the moment. There is a smattering of OPN and OPNG, with a promise of 800 new batches that they will release to us at "some" point. ARP is trying to get some hard drives of their own, but haven't been able to. It is unknown if this is due to supply chain issues or monetary issues.
SCC and TB we've heard no indication of when they are coming back as both of these projects are in a hold state while they process data and decide what to do next.

At the moment WCG is a project with more volunteers compute time than it needs. It is nice to be needed but at the moment we can feel good that we are doing all that is needed, and hope soon the tables will turn as more projects come back.

I think a weekly update on issues being worked on and a status of each project would be great. It is ok if it is just "same as last week" Then you can end each weekly update with a link to the donation page.

I've had this WU problem also which is why I've turned on Tn-Grid to fill in on my Ryzen 9.
The 2 keep it running.... well last week Tn-Grid had its problem and I had to turn on Rosetta.

Keeping other projects on does the trick. Rosetta is off again for now. I check 3-4 times a day.

I've tried many times to wean myself from other projects but it's a no-go so this is the solution for me

EDITED:
Today Feb 26, this tactic has paid off. The machines have run dry and the other projects kept them humming. There are 8 WCG WUs in all the queues and they were gotten yesterday the 25th.

Re: Information Organization

Dear all – thank you for the comments and suggestions. Well received. We do try to increase the communications, but I rather not post than just post for the sake of posting. Too much of that on social media and unfortunately news channels too.

We have regular monthly meetings with all science teams but even in between them we try to encourage the teams to send us updates we can share with volunteers. There were several posted on the web and forums over the last few months – but I agree, more good quality updates would be better.

As we have posted – SCC/OPN/HSTB all were off due to science – finishing analysis on the past targets and preparing new work units. OPN and SCC are entering new phase – OPN WUs are already available and new WUs should be increasing from SCC shortly in addition to the current MCM.

Technical side of the Grid – we are making some progress – but still, it feels like trying to fit F1 engine into Fiat 500 chassis (no disrespect to the classic Italian design). We had to rebuild the back end to fit the hardware constraints we live with – and we still discover some strange behaviour (e.g., the recent drying out of WUs, while we had them ready due to automation). We do not have hardware that would match cloud setup used before – but we continue to look for funding or partners that could help us there (note: we do not have budget to run cloud going forward either).

As the projects move on to the new phase, and as we solve our back-end aches, there would be more science to report on. Also, once we resolve our technical challenges, we have plans for new projects and new initiatives. The balance between number of projects and number of volunteers/devices is a tricky one – and there are also (multiple good) reasons why only about 1-2 new projects were onboarded annually over the history of WCG.

So, while I do not have the answers yet, and cannot commit ETA for new projects, we are on this together with you – we do not have split personalities but we wear multiple hats – we are volunteers, science partners, and we also try to run the Grid now. While it is not perfect – we are making a progress and the Grid with 62,751 devices actively contributing over the last month and producing 3,340,603 run time days contributing to science in that period is much better than Grid closed by the end of 2021.

For now – we have only limited resources – but in time improved infrastructure and funding would enable us to expand. One such expansion in the future will also be a full time communications professional.

thank you
Igor

Many thanks Dr. Jurisica.
I know some of us get a bit sarcastic at times, but we are willing to do our part. We know your resources are not unlimited and at least I believe you are doing the best you can with what you have.

I agree.
One such expansion in the future will also be a full time communications professional.

I await with baited breath. A few words occasionally from the researchers themselves are always appreciated.
Just a suggestion: There may be some volunteer organization(s) in the Toronto area who may have some retired communication specialists who may either volunteer or work at some reduced rate just to keep their finger in the business. It never hurts to ask.
Cheers

I think you should check again. The cumulative monthly runtime is surely not better than it was before the grid closed. It's about half the runtime it was before:

SNURK,
I think Dr Jurisica meant that the current monthly runtime is better than it would have been if WCG had closed at the end of 2021 (I.e. zero), not that it is better than it actually was at the end of 2021.
Cheers,
Mark
