My machines have been sitting mostly idle for almost a year now. I tried to do some processing back in October, 2022, but shut them back off because there were soooo many issues it just wasn't worth the effort to babysit them.
I just spent 15 minutes trying to find anything in the forums that says "we're back to 100% now" or "we have a plan" - and I couldn't really find anything. It appears there has been very little information on the state of the migration, and no easy place to find it. Is there anyone with direct knowledge of how things are going who could relay something definitive? I'd really like to know if I can turn this stuff back on and have it be 100% no-babysitting productive, or if I should just sell it off and recoup some of the expense. Thanks. |

Hi jnewman67, we are not completely back yet, as we have been busy solving user issues. We consider ourselves in a "testing phase" where BOINC is running like it was before but needs some time to a return to a state that resembles what it was like before the move to Krembil. You are still able to crunch workunits like usual (your experience will be vastly improved than it was in October), just with the ocassional server issue. We will make a large announcement when we feel we are in a position to announce we are "100% back". I hope that's the kind of answer you were looking for. |

It's been 6 months since I last checked in, but I've not really seen any updates, so I'm reaching out to see where things are at. Has there been any meaningful progress in available work to do or the ability to get that work in that time? I've poked around the forums and the news sections, and have not seen anything hopeful, so thought I'd ask. It might just be time to close this chapter, sell off my hardware, and call it done otherwise.
Thanks. |

My machines have been sitting mostly idle for almost a year now. In the meantime join another project.Denis@home has 479188 WUs ready to crunch.Yes it's a pain to babysit but at least the $ I put into the rigs are not idle Maybe the machines fall idle at night sometimes but rarely. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll ponder, though I liked the variety of work WCG offered that was more personal to me. I spent the 2022 downtime upgrading hardware and adding to my hardware pile, but I think I'll probably just unload it and call it a day. I was enjoying the thrill of the Top 1,000 hunt, and had closed in on 3/3 measures, and if I have to start over and babysit something that was otherwise (for me) smooth as butter (VERY expensive butter), then I guess I'll just cut my losses.
I've really enjoyed being able to participate in this project, and over the years was able to spend more money on ramping up my participation (that's why the Gov created write-offs, isn't it?), but I guess I'll call it a day and try to recoup some of the $20,000 I've spent on this project. It was, however, kind of nice not working in an 82 degree office this summer while they sat idle. To the rest of you that are sticking this out, thank you. |

There have been some recent hiccups around weekend WU availability that they're investigating with the Datacenter, but M-F there's more than enough work to keep all of my systems pumping.
If you're not receiving WU's, check your version of BOINC (under Help | About) -- v7.22.2 is available for Windows and someone else that was experiencing difficulty with downloads installed that & things started working. You don't have to uninstall/reinstall (and definitely don't delete your Host ID). |

There's no reason not to run it on the actual computer you use, and sell off the extra stuff. WCG needs funding more than computing power at the moment, so maybe send some of the proceeds their way.
----------------------------------------As noted above, Monday-Friday has been fine. You can add a backup project to BOINC and set it & forget it. Pick one from the BOINC website that fits what you want to support.

We just have to remember that, when IBM was running/maintaining WCG ,we were 'overly spoilt' - although didn't realise it back then, with the amount of time and resources they were able to throw at it. Yes, things aren't as 'good' and/or 'reliable' just at the moment, but it's far better to have WCG running - albeit, with 'hiccups along the way', than no WCG at all.

Funding fixes a lot of issues. That cannot be over stated.
