I've several older laptops here, which are only there to crunch.
----------------------------------------However, i don't seem to be able to get ONLY GPU tasks. Running CPU-only tasks is so inefficient, that I'd gladly abandon that for good - (i am aware, that a GPU unit needs some CPU, too) so: Can i get only GPU-WU, and if so, how? Thank you in advance! P.S.: Windows 10 Pro here. [Edit 2 times, last edit by jayrope at Nov 21, 2022 2:52:10 PM] |

Sure we have...look into your Device Profiles.

Change the profile you want to use for GPU-only.
----------------------------------------Select OpenPandemics - COVID-19 as the only project and in the processor usage part set "Allow research to run on my CPU? ' to NO. and of course the "Graphics Card Usage" to Yes. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Crystal Pellet at Nov 22, 2022 5:44:42 PM] |

@bluestang & @CrystalPellet:
----------------------------------------Thank you very much. I used to set prefs in BOINC directly. The option to unallow CPU tasks doesn't seem to exist there. So yes, WCG's device profiles do provide a choice there, very nice. Thank you again. [Edit 1 times, last edit by jayrope at Nov 24, 2022 5:18:10 PM] |

The problem with setting the CPU to NO is that when there are no GPU WUs available you are doing no crunching whatsoever. At least when set to YES crunching is happening all the time.

Running CPU-only tasks is so inefficient, that I'd gladly abandon that for good Most projects here at WCG have only CPU applications, so CPU is the most efficent crunching possible for those projects. So if you want efficiency, best is to try to limit OPN to OPNG and crunch the rest on CPU. To do this, you need to: - enable CPU and GPU crunching - enable all CPU-only projects you want except OPN - enable "If there is no work available for the project(s) I have selected above, please send me work from another project." You might still get some OPN1 that way, but only if the server has nothing else in the moment your computers ask for work. For better results, i.e. OPN only on GPU, you'd have to run two BOINC clients with two different profiles, one for CPU and one for GPU. ![]() |
