My router is reporting that I am getting port scans from IBM. It is scanning ports 33400 up to 33455. I looked this IP address up under whois and this is what it reports.
Search results for: 129.33.82.49 OrgName: IBM OrgID: IBM-1 Address: IBM Raleigh - IP Services Team Address: 3039 Cornwallis Road City: Reserach Triangle Park StateProv: NC PostalCode: 27709-2195 Country: US NetRange: 129.33.0.0 - 129.33.255.255 Is this WCG doing these scans and if so, WHY? |

The scans on your ports are traceroutes that IBM uses in order to direct traffic in the most efficent ways. This topic was gone over and over again with a near riot on the board until it was finally related the reason for the trace route.
"These traceroutes are indeed coming from IBM. They happen whenever someone downloads any significant data from an IBM hosting center. Since IBM uses multiple ISPs, they're done to find the most efficient route to the client to improve throughput. This is why some people noticed these before joining World Community Grid. They are using software from Route Science (http://www.routescience.com/), if you want to know more. Bottom line, traceroutes are harmless and, in this case, useful for getting the data to you efficently. Hope this clears up this little mystery. We'll be adding this to our network FAQ for future reference." ---------------------------------------- Rick Alther World Community Grid Application Developer |
