Pros and Cons of GPU Crunching

Can anyone give me a quick guide to the pros and cons of GPU crunching. I have spent all of my time crunching on CPU only and am wondering if I should add GPU if that is possible and advantageous.

Any guidance gratefully received.

Re: Pros and Cons of GPU Crunching

GPU crunching can be much more efficient than CPU crunching if the application is compatible with parallel programming. Not all applications can be done this way. If there is a GPU application it appears they are close to an order of magnitude faster than the CPU variety.

Thanks Joe. Are there any major disadvantages to GPU crunching?

You are generating a lot of heat and you see the disadvantage on your electricity bill... tongue

Thanks Ralf, any others?

I've just done my first GPU WU and noted that it is much quicker but has only generated 2.1 points as opposed to the average 85 - 95 on CPU. Hardly seems worth it.

My last OPN1 gave me 127 points.
The last OPNG 917

Nothing -- just wait for validation :-)

The credit your system claims for OPNG tasks is unrelated to the amount of GPU effort (which the client can't measure!). Once the result is validated, the WCG system works out a credit score based on the "difficulty" of the jobs within the work unit and some inside knowledge of how many iterations the GPU used for each set of dockings performed.

So, for instance, I recently had a batch of OPNG tasks that all claimed 58.6 but were awarded credit values from 868 to 1125...

Cheers - Al.

Re: Pros and Cons of GPU Crunching

Another question: does use of the GPU have any adverse effects on CPU crunching?

Well, for me, GPU or not is not an issue, most hosts I have do not have a workable GPU in the first place. A few however do, and I just got from last night less than a dozen WUs for OPNG.

They all seem run fine, on a more recent NVidia system the WU was running for 0.03h of runtime, requesting 3 credits when I checked, but hasn't validated yet. I saw others, for older 1050TI NVidia, which ran for 0.3 and 0.4 hours and resulted also in a single digit request for credit, but when validated were granted almost 1000 credits. Mind you though, those are "WCG credits" (unless that would be something Krembil in fact DID change!?), which for pre-BOINC reasons is 7x the amount you will see in the BOINC stats. So 1000 credits/points on WCG would be 128 points on BOINC.

But then overall, WUs are still in scarce supply, so things can change at any time...
