Re: Pros and Cons of GPU Crunching

when validated were granted almost 1000 credits. Mind you though, those are "WCG credits"

Nope. They are BOINC credits.

So 1000 credits/points on WCG would be 128 points on BOINC.

Nope. 1000 BOINC credits would be 7000 WCG points,

Re: Pros and Cons of GPU Crunching

It seems, that when GPU WUs are running, that the CPU WUs are running at about
half the normal speed. Is this what would be expected?

Is your GPU integrated with the CPU?

Re: Pros and Cons of GPU Crunching

When the GPU is in operation it is running with 0.616 CPUs and 1 Intel GPU so can I assume that means it is integrated?

Re: Pros and Cons of GPU Crunching

You said Intel, which tells me it's a GPU integrated with the CPU (aka they're on the same chip). So yes, it's normal that running the GPU and the CPU at the same time results in a slowdown.
A dedicated GPU will not have that issue.

Re: Pros and Cons of GPU Crunching

Thanks for that.

So, is it better to run the occasional GPU and accept that the CPUs will be at half speed whilst it is running or is it better to scrub the GPU and run the CPUs at full speed? I get the feeling that the GPU is generating huge amounts of crunching points and that would outweigh the half speed CPUs. Is that correct?

The OPN GPU tasks used to contain a large number of jobs per task. it could be 60, 100 or even more. On a really fast GPU, these used to take just a few minutes to run. In comparison, an OPN CPU task contains 1 or 2 jobs and takes maybe 2 hours on an average CPU.
In any case, I wouldn't run OPN on the CPU.
