Can BOINC run successfully under Win XP SP-3?

In preparation to WCG going live, I attempted to reactivate one of my older systems.
Unfortunately, the first little bundle of joy I had downloaded (took several hours) but then proceeded to error out, copy/paste info here:

<core_client_version>7.14.2</core_client_version>
<![CDATA[
<message>
couldn't start app: CreateProcess() failed - (unknown error)</message>
]]>

I then installed, what I thought was an XP SP-3 compatible version. But now, BOINC claims there is no internet connection.

Rebooted system - no help.

Any suggestions?

Well, yes and no.There are some projects on WCG that require a 64bit OS and will not run (or immediately error out) on a 32bit system. And as Windows XP is predominantly 32bit, those projects won't run on your box (and 64bit Windows XP is a completely different can of worms altogether)
As there currently is no general flow of WUs right now, it is hard to check, but I think both ARP1 and OPN1 are two of the projects that won't run on 32bit (I still have both a Windows XP and a Windows Server 2003 system here at a client), MCM however might (quite possible that I am mixing up OPN1 and MCM)...

If you get no Internet connection, then you have a different issue in the first place, but that is kind of hard to diagnose from the distance on a forum like this... confused

Re: Can BOINC run successfully under Win XP SP-3?

At some point I will need to define a profile for my WinXP systems. I’ll probably use “Home” as the base profile.

But first I need to figure out why BOINC is unable to connect to the internet EVEN THOUGH MY COMPUTER is connected. I have a LAN at the house that is always connected to the internet.

My gut feeling is I have some software incompatibility between the version of BOINC I just installed and WinXP - which I should NOT have done so quickly.

Yes, remote forum troubleshooting leaves a bit too much to be desired.

Re: Can BOINC run successfully under Win XP SP-3?

What version of BOINC did you install?

The BOINC Client software page does have the following warning:
NOTE: versions before 7.18 may require updating the CA bundle file in order to communicate with some projects.
Your recommended version is 7.14.2 which would definitely include an out-of-date security library.
The BOINC website has a description of the issue and instructions for a fix:

Re: Can BOINC run successfully under Win XP SP-3?

Just a suggestion, but why not try a Linux version as an OS. Some are quite easy to set up and BOINC works just fine. However, if your machine is a 32 bit machine, I would say to just retire it for crunching purposes as it would be highly inefficient anyway. However the machine will still be good for internet browsing, email and other light duty work. If you stick with XP, you can probably still find some versions of Wordperfect or XYwrite which would still function well, so it could still be a very serviceable word processor. Some versions of OpenOffice or LibreOffice would still work if you needed spreadsheet or database use
Cheers

biggrin Re: Can BOINC run successfully under Win XP SP-3?

I was able to fix the internet connection issue by reinstalling ver 7.14.2.

I’ll be reviewing the links you all kindly provided.

And continuing to wait patiently while system testing continues. [The phrase: “To infinity and beyond” popped into my mind as I was previewing this message. 😜]

Re: Can BOINC run successfully under Win XP SP-3?

No problem running BOINC on Windows XP 32 bit, as that is what I am doing now and have been since 2005 I think I started.
Memory requirements and a preference for 64 bit is starting to limit the number of projects that I can run under 32 bit but a number still do.
Most Math projects still run fine.
MilkyWay Separation work units runs fine as does Universe (used to haven't checked for a while).
In the case of the main Medical projects then
Rosetta is out and wont run on Win XP,
TN-Grid will do so with no problems at all
World Community Grid will gladly run all projects except OPN1 which fails immediately, African Rainfall Project runs fine but I limit it to only run 1 work unit at a time due to needing 1GB of RAM (you can limit in account preferences).

Other than that all OK with BOINC.

Useful information. Just curious as to what your system specs are and how long it takes an ARP unit to complete.
Thanks

Actually XP can run any project here. The reason tasks immediately error out is because the executable is looking for a version of windows # 6 (win7) or higher. XP is only a version 5. There is a hack for the executable that will change the version it is looking for to 5 which will allow any project from WCG to run on XP with no ill effects or errors.

Well, I probably should have indicated that OPN1 was the WU that kept failing. Have taken that out of the active account preferences.
I'll check out my system and decide what further options I might use.

Thanks for your feedback!
