Running client on AMD A64 X2

Is it possible to run two copies of WCG from two different directories on an AMD A64 X2 Duel core CPU?

Re: Running client on AMD A64 X2

Hello Leon_R,
No. The Windows Agent has some hardcoded sync variables that would get out of sync if we tried running 2 threads, so only one WCG thread is allowed to run in a system. To get around this, you would have to run something like VMware. Sorry. (You can run multiple threads in our Linux Agent.)

Re: Running client on AMD A64 X2

With the growing popularity of dual-core CPUs, are there plans to start making better use of all this newfound idle CPU time? i.e. when are we going to see a Windows version of WCG that can handle multi-core processors?

Probably not for a while. We are expanding to new computing platforms, starting up new projects and moving to support multiple languages. We need to see how much effort this takes and how much spare time ( laughing ) the staff has to work on other things.

Re: Running client on AMD A64 X2

The BOINC client has this feature built in and it makes good use of multiproccessors, there is a feature on the preferences pages for BOINC to set up on mutilprocessor machines.

but you will have to wait for it to come to windows

Re: Running client on AMD A64 X2

Actually, you can under Windows XP, but it's probably unsupported.

I have a dual AMD MP system running two instances just fine for over a month. The way to set it up is to create two user accounts, install the agent twice into two different directories, and set one of the agents to run in NT Compatability mode.

You can find full details of this procedure at

BTW, You don't need seem to need to worry about setting thread affinity. Make sure you delete your shortcuts on installation!

Re: Running client on AMD A64 X2

Hello JonathanMurphy,

I would worry about the global synchronization variables in UD.exe. Things might go wrong in a work unit without causing an obvious crash. I am going to ask Rick Alther (programmer) to read your post. Unless he okays this method, I would advise anybody reading this post not to try this experiment.

Re: Running client on AMD A64 X2

Mycrofth,

It would be good to get this 'offically' sanctioned as a workable solution for all those with dual processor/core systems, in the absense of true SMP support under Windows.

I should emphasise that a significant number of people over at the 'other place' have been using this method successfully for a considerable time, with no obvious issues.

However, the prospect of wasting cycles to submit inaccurate / corrupt results is of concern.

I look forward to Rick's findings!

Jonathan.

I think they're doing the same on the linux/boinc don't they? Just runs 2 instances. They seem to be validated properly. I don't know for sure though.
