Realtime priority vs -19 Nice priority

A couple months ago we discussed the evils of setting the rosetta process at Realtime priority on a uniprocessor capable machine and learned that it was a no no (nono?). We also learned that setting the priority to 'High' doesn't buy us anything. Now that we have a linux client, can you tell us anything about niceness? Will it buy us anything to set the level at negative 19 versus positive 19?

With all these bells and whistles, I want to at least blow or toot something!!

Thank you! whistling

Re: Realtime priority vs -19 Nice priority

The actual BOINC client software which kicks off the rosetta software which runs at a Nice level of 0, so it is running at a normal level. The rosetta software is started at nice level 19, which means that if any other software wishes to use the processor it steps back to allow the other program to run. I would not recommend setting this above the nice level of the BOINC software becuase it needs to run commands like pause rosetta to run benchmarks and other commands. It is highly recommended to leave this as 19 so that your system is responsive.

Also by setting the Nice higher priority than 19 does not make the workunit finish faster.
