It's pretty sad to see that the new kid in town has completely dropped the ball. Four months going into five and the migration still is not complete??? I've been involved in some major data center moves and migrations in the past and this is definitely the worst I've seen and probably the longest on record. Krembil had the resources of IBM - you don't get better. So what went wrong? It's clear that leadership didn't know what it was doing. I've never seen a production machine down for more than a day. Most of that time was consumed performing backups in case mirroring failed for some reason. Krembil seems to think that a few months without is just fine??? It's obviously too late to go back and fix this. But it's clear that some priorities still need to be realigned. No work gets done if you don't get it out to the participants.

I am no apologist for Krembil, but there are probably a myriad of reasons why this transition is taking way longer than many of us anticipated. Perhaps at some time in the future the admins of Krembil will be kind enough to enlighten us on the ins and outs of why it is taking so long. That being said, it is easy to see progress is being made.

Just want to add my thanks for Krembil for taking on this project. If it wasn't for you, it would have died out completely. While we are all frustrated by not being able to participate in a project we all love, you don't deserve the harsh words thrown at you.
You are not IBM and it isn't reasonable to expect that this project will be on the same level, but I'm personally grateful that you took on this huge job, and are making the best of it. It is nice to see the progress being made, and it feels like each day you are getting closer and closer to being out of the test phase. |

Thank you Unixchick and Sgt.Joe for kind words, and thank you tgmct for the comments
Indeed, it is taking us much longer than anticipated. But, we are an academic group, within Krembil Research Institute at UHN that embarked on saving the Grid. We have neither people nor system resources of IBM. We used the term "migration:" for the process (I can see now that it was not a lucky choice) - but "this move" is far from simple backup and restore process. We are rebuilding many parts to ensure it can run within constraints of the system (both hardware and software) we have available. Expanding from MCM project resources to support the Grid is not trivial. But we are as committed as before - and with the help of volunteers and partners, we will succeed. We thank the volunteers for all suggestions and help finding errors - which is an immense help at this stage of preparing for the full restart. Together, we will make the system better for exciting and important scientific discoveries. thank you Igor |

I understand. You took on a massive, complicated job, and managed to academic it into an even more massively over-complicated job.
But you introduced us to BOINC, who will be distributing my compute cycles to other projects until WCG comes back up. Hang in there, and don't worry, it's only ones and zeros. |

Keep at it Mr Jurisica. You'll get there in the end, I'm sure about that. I hold my thumbs for you and your team.

Thank you, Dr. Jurisica. There are members willing and capable to help your team with software and hardware if you post your needs. More transparency will help.

This has actually been discussed many a times already, surpassed possibly only by at least 1 post a day asking about the URL (and not just here either).
However, Jurasica did take some time to respond to the criticism... |

Frankly, I don't know why IBM just didn't donate the servers and WCG related hardware, and transport it to it's new data center. It would have been a much shorter, and smoother, process that wouldn't be going on for almost 5 months. There was no need to reinvent the wheel for this transition, or take on the risks which that involves.
----------------------------------------We just went through a major system upgrade at my work. They never go 100% smooth, and you must have the new system running and validated against the current one before you make the final switch-over. Hopefully they are getting to the end toward normality, and we won't lose too many volunteers from this migration. ![]() “Where an excess of power prevails, property of no sort is duly respected.
