Re: Problem on Multi-CPU Windows 2003 Server

So is there any particular reason that this app doesn't want to use all the CPU it has available? You would think that more is better for this sort of application.

sad Re: Problem on Multi-CPU Windows 2003 Server

I have an old P3 Dual 600 machine that had an old Grid install that allowed me to have 2 instances of grid running. Task manager showed 100% (50% for each processor). In program files I had UnitedDevices1 and UnitedDevices2 and ran 2 seperate instances. I have not been able to make it work on newer versions of grid. I have recently switched it to WCG and have lost that. Taskman now shows only 1 cpu maxed out.

Re: Problem on Multi-CPU Windows 2003 Server

Hello sonoma,
A long time ago, United Devices discovered that UD.exe needed to be reprogrammed to run multiple instances correctly. So they added some code to try to keep multiple instances from running. Eventually they intend to upgrade so that this can be done correctly, but for now it is a no-no.

Sorry,

Re: Problem on Multi-CPU Windows 2003 Server

I have just switched from seti (17.000+ sets), just to discover that this can't use my doual PIII 850 Mhz server to the max? And the last post from the team is from april?

Is there a ETA on a fix to this? Why not detect dual systems, and automaticaly run two processes?

It ain't possible with the current UD agent.
The staff is considering a boinc agent for windows that will support multiple processors.

Re: Problem on Multi-CPU Windows 2003 Server

Hello,

I have the same problem with an IBM Netfinity 5000 with W2k3 SP1 french edition on 2 x P3-500 and 2Gb RAM ECC.

Task Manager says 50% CPUs used.

You can use the BOINC agent for WCG. It does not yet process FAAH work units but should before too long. It now runs HPF units and will let you run as many CPUs or Cores as you have.

For more info on this, please look here.

Re: Problem on Multi-CPU Windows 2003 Server

It seems this thread generated some interest. Well I finally got the chance to update my server box. I updated the BIOS, applied SP1 for Windows 2003 Server and turned off hyperthreading using the BIOS setting. I also set DEP (a new feature added by SP1) for essential Windows processes only.

I then reinstalled the latest UD agent and all is running smoothly for 3 weeks now. I'm not sure which change did thet trick, but I am happy with the results.

A note: I still force the UD agent to run against only one of the two processors by periodically running a script that changes the UD agent process's affinity as described in my first post. I do this as an extra precaution to help minimize any performace impact the UD agent might have considering the fact that I am running it on a production machine.

It would be nice if the UD agent had a Processor Affinity option.

Re: Problem on Multi-CPU Windows 2003 Server

As always, things continue to change. There is now a Windows BOINC agent for the WCG that runs both HPF and FAAH. It was designed to use multiple CPUs (again running at the lowest priority). I have been running it on my dual core P4 and it works very well without any noticeable interference with my other work. Instructions for converting in this fashion are located HERE
