Why is the downtime so incredibly long? If downtime does not begin until the 28th, why not just issue work units with shorter and shorter deadlines, instead of sacrificing two weeks of contributions? Is it possible to temporarily redirect work requests to a sister project, to keep the contributions to science going? I'm sure Rosetta, SIDoc and Einstein@home would appreciate a temporary boost to their userbase. Dayle, the estimated downtime is necessary to run all the testing and move all the data produced by WCG. Instead of using time to tweak the deadlines, we'd rather completely focus on the migration. You are of course welcome to support other BOINC projects. This thread lists some of the sister projects. |

Thank you for your understanding.
"Preserving streaks" and honoring continued support Any streak that is active as of Feb 14th will be “transformed” to the date we go live. This will give returning volunteers an automatic extension to their streaks, in addition to a new badge of "surviving the outage". igor |

Will work units sent out around the 14th have longer deadlines, e.g. two weeks, so we can load up a bit to keep running things from the 21st-27th? It isnt like resends will be going out after 14th, so as long as the deadline is after 14, then you are good, but don't load up more than you can do by the 27 return deadline. |

That's a good point - thanks! |

As there are 2 weeks between stopping new work and the end of receipt of work, might resends still continue for, say, 1 week? That would help to clear up outstanding units.

The reason for the two weeks is that if we stop sending out new work on the 14th that gives 2 weeks to let all in-motion work-units complete (i.e. aenough time for the resends to be sent out and be returned). The two week period is based on previous project wind-downs.
----------------------------------------Getting all in-progress work completed allows us to make sure that nothing is lingering on volunteer's machines and that we can cleanly complete batches and return those to the researchers so that everyone is in a well known state. Thank you Kevin. That should mean that no-one will have any pending units for the 2 months.

Will the recruiting badges return after the migration where we can see them like we do the other badges?

Whether your graph of Recent Average Credit runs around 700 (like mine) or 700,000, we will be equally traumatized by the temporary chasm in our graphs.
But we'll get over it. Smooth sailing to the Transfer Team. Recommend a Hollywood film crew to document the undertaking. It sounds huuuuge. |
