Dear all - thank you for the questions, concerns and answers (thank you Mike, Falconet, Unixchick). It is true, many aspects of WCG remain in planning stage, currently on the back burner, until we finalize migration. - we do have a plan to revive the membership (and your answers were accurate, GDPR, inactivity - but there are also users that replaced machines and did not setup on the new ones, or quit the job and did not restart WCG with a new account, etc, - but (after finishing the migration) we do want to bring new projects and with that new volunteers We are not there yet - but we are excited to get there soon. sincerely igor Thank you for your comments. Cheers. |

It's worth noting that despite boinc stats, the runtime seems to have held relatively steady, if not more consistently averaged above pre-IBM departure announce (currently consistently 580-600 years of runtime, vs fluctuating closer to 550s)
----------------------------------------https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/stat/viewG...amp;numRecordsPerPage=180 WHILE it is not encouraging to see users depart for the variety of factors presented by other contributors and Dr. Jurisica, it is still good news that the Grid's work doesn't appear to be affected on this end. There's other reasons ofc, with more effective use of the grid with the transition of OPN towards GPU, and the Africa Rainfall Project's progress is also an important factor. With ARP nearing its end, the one concern/hope I have would be that if the transition/other work at Krembil doesn't finish in time to get a new project up b4 ARP takes its bow. Reducing to 3 projects (with HSTB's activity still very limited, essentially 2) could only increase the burden on the OPN and MCM teams when it comes to generating work units for a thirsty grid as-is, and exasperating all the problems that are being juggled... I do not envy the position WCG is in. Sending love to everyone on the teams, and sincerely hope the best possible outcomes can be achieved (w/o overworking) [Edit 1 times, last edit by yoerik at Feb 8, 2022 5:52:06 PM] |

To add to yoerik's comments, I would say that it is important to get another non-medical project running before ARP finishes. Otherwise, we will be down to medical projects only which would narrow the appeal.

unfortunate, but I would guess that Krembil (and the Grid) would be better positioned to benefit from funding programs in Canada if the next project *is* a medical project, and tying the grid into Krembil's research areas can help cement its future funding overall?
----------------------------------------The original "new home" post: "new research themes we plan to launch soon, once we fully transition the operation of the grid." "Additionally, we are in the early planning stages of a new project that seeks to identify novel treatments for Parkinson’s disease" The in-house Parkinson's project would likely be what's up first, and the easiest given it's in-house? |

Thank you all again.
----------------------------------------indeed, there are research areas where we could contribute and where our own research fits; but by no means we want to limit the original scope and reduce the breadth of research WCG has been supporting. But, it is also true that as an academic institution, we do have to find a way to support this noble and worthy work that IBM WCG team has started and supported for almost two decades. Big shoes to fill – continue to work on the tangible, long term solution. The vision remains - making the world a better place - by the people for the people thank you igor [Edit 1 times, last edit by Jurisica at Feb 9, 2022 3:14:08 AM] |

The vision remains - making the world a better place - by the people for the people Sorry, I was triggered by that last remark, mainly the last three words.Maybe most people aren't ready for this idea ... The world would be a better place if we better take care of nature and animals. If we better take care of nature and animals, then the world will be a better place, not only for people, but for all life on our planet. So if there would be a proposal for a new project to - let's say - investigate avian influenza, known informally as avian flu or bird flu, to find a new method to fight the disease, would it be eligible? (I know there are vaccines, this was just an example.) I can't imagine that this is a bad idea. Adri |

I would certainly participate on projects related to animal health.

it might be interesting to poll the current members to see what kind of projects they like, but I don't think there is much choice of projects, but more of an educating groups how WCG can help. We can poll and say we want projects in some field, but if that field doesn't know about WCG or have the money or experience to use WCG it isn't going to happen.
We are all drawn to different projects so a variety would be nice. I also think that communication from the scientists also affects the excitement around a project. Frequent updates that are understandable to non-experts keep current people as well as provide something that can be shared with others to get new people to join the project. |

Thank you Falconet - indeed - such projects could be relevant - and would provide nice diversity to WCG.

As a very long time contributor to WCG (12+ years and in the top 50 of all Members), I just found out tonight that WCG, in essence, seems to be 1)sent off to a research facility for no given reason and 2)doesn't give any details or assurances at all of what projects will remain, which will end in X months prematurely after the move, and what types of projects will be available in the near as well as not-so-near future.
----------------------------------------I have contributed solely to Cancer related projects. I would like to continue that donation. But nothing in the News areas talks about the the crux of this move-the projects. I welcome to hear from the Krembil about my concerns. It would be really sad if all the Cancer projects (and other WCG-type projects that you others out there may contribute to) were deleted and now WCG is just crunching for Parkinson's for a research facility. I am very much an optimist, but this news really sounds negative due to the lack of project details. Thanks. |
