New project URL?

Got a notice in BOINC:

World Community Grid: Notice from BOINC
This project is using an old URL. When convenient, remove the project, then add https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/

Is it possible to edit client_state.xml instead of remove/adding project?

Re: New project URL?

I got this one on my laptop:

01/10/2021 19:39:37 | World Community Grid | You are attached to this project twice. Please remove projects named World Community Grid, then add https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/

Project communication is working so I don't believe anyone has to do anything. Let the techs sort it out.

Re: New project URL?

I assume it's not an error, they want to switch to the secure https, but who knows.

Re: New project URL?

A change of this kind would have been announced. I think this is related to the outage.

Re: New project URL?

BOINC identifies projects by the "master URL". Unfortunately it treats http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org and https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org as two different projects.

I briefly tried to switch it over and got that error message.

Unfortunately, changing it triggered this message on people's devices and I don't know how to prevent it. It will require further investigation to see how this change can be made without impacting end users.

I have changed it back and no-one should receive that message again.

No action is required on the users part and you can ignore that message (you also should not receive it again).

Please note that the master URL is only used to make the initial connection to the server to get the basic configuration.

Subsequent calls to the web rpcs, scheduler and file uploads occur over https regardless of the master URL.

We will have to work a process to avoid creating issues for the end users to make this change. There has been a long standing need to allow projects to change their master URLs and have the clients accept them without them having users have to detach and re-attach.

Re: New project URL?

I'm not even sure you can attach to WCG using https. I think that wasn't possible in past.

Edit: Thanks knreed.

Re: New project URL?

Rosetta@home has https. If I remember correctly, they changed it when I was active on that project.

Re: New project URL?

On a short time the master URL went https, I got this message: You are attached to this project twice. Please remove projects named World Community Grid, then add (HTTPS link).

Edit: Looks like all this stuff might not be needed - looks like it only does HTTP for when it is adding project. However, I did do this HTTP to HTTPS change to Rosetta at home to get rid of this message and keep tasks.

On the client side, there is a way to manually switch from HTTP to HTTPS and keep existing tasks.

Stop boinc client. (service boinc-client stop (Linux only), or boinccmd --stop, or Windows BOINC GUI, file, shut down connected client)

Go to C:\ProgramData\BOINC (Windows) or /var/lib/boinc (Linux Debian).
Open client_state.xml in text editor (Notepad in windows)
Find what: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/
Replace with: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/
Replace all.
File, save.

Open: account_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml
Change http to https. Save.

Start BOINC client. All existing tasks are kept and can continue crunching tasks. This worked for me.

After all this, I got this message: You are attached to this project twice. Please remove projects named World Community Grid, then add (unsecure HTTP link), Possible message bug somewhere, but otherwise it continues to send and receive tasks just fine on HTTPS, so I guess just ignore this message.

Probably on a server side source code. to prevent client message, should detect HTTPS and reply as master URL = HTTPS, and if it detects unsecure HTTP connection reply as master URL = HTTP. BOINC Client should then see the master URL match up and avoid a message.
