Hi All,
----------------------------------------Have had the MacBook Pro for about a year, and have just decided to continue with Boinc. What I can't understand is that it appears that the "crunching" stops when the computer goes to sleep! Also there are about 36 different tasks showing, in various states of progress, whereas my previous windows machine just had 1 or 2 showing. I've had a look in the preferences but cannot see what I'm doing wrong. Any help/ advice would be appreciated. Pete Watkins. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Petekins at Apr 17, 2021 10:37:06 AM] |

Hi Pete,
I think it may be expected behavior for BOINC / WCG work to stop when the computer goes to sleep. If you're wanting WCG work to be able to run 24/7, I'd recommend going into System Preferences and then into the Energy Saver preference pane. Once you are there, there should be a tab at the top for "Power Adapter" - click on that, and then make sure the "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off" is checked. This should prevent your MacBook Pro 2019 16" from going to sleep when it is plugged into a power adapter, but won't affect its ability to go to sleep when running on battery. In terms of the number of World Community Grid tasks that you are seeing, 36 sounds about right to me. The computer you have either has a 6-core / 12-thread CPU or an 8-core / 16-thread CPU which means it can work on either 12 or 16 WCG tasks simultaneously. The BOINC agent will normally download some extra work units to have on hand for your computer (this is an adjustable setting), so seeing 36 total work units sounds about right. It is possible that your previous Windows machine had an older, less powerful CPU in it with less cores and threads. Hope that helps a bit! |

Hi mbotmiller,
Thanks for reply, unfortunately I've checked the box to stop the 'puter sleeping when display is off, when on power adapter, but it still stops crunching when it goes to sleep! Weird! Anything else you can think of will be appreciated Thanks Pete Watkins |

Hi,
----------------------------------------Quick update...I found that the 'puter stops crunching when I manually chose "Sleep" from the drop down Apple menu, but all seems well if I leave the machine alone letting it go to sleep after the time set. Also I noticed that the temp of the CPU was about 75 C !(fans going ape!) and the power adapter was very hot. So I lowered the setting of Boinc to use at most 50% of the CPU's and 45% of CPU time...this lowered the temp to about 50-52 C (fans running v slowly now) which is better, also the power adapter (96W) is now just pleasantly warm! Also the number of tasks is now down to 10. Hope this helps anyone else with similar probs. Pete Watkins. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Petekins at Apr 19, 2021 1:50:16 PM] |
