There are specialized hardware units called ASICs. They perform some computation to mine crypto currency, such as Bitcoin. The computational problems they solve however (as far as I know) have no real world use and are done just for the sake of mining the virtual coin.
If the World Community Grid created their own crypto currency, which you could mine by offering your computational power, would that create a greater incentive for people to solve the problems that the World Community Grid has to offer? |

There are already crypto currencies that reward work on WCG. Gridcoin and Obyte do. There was also SPARC, which became DCC, but they don't work on BOINC anymore and their coins didn't have value back then (maybe still don't?). And there was also Neumannium, but I don't know if that is still a thing.
I think there are others cryptos I have forgotten, in past and present, that reward(ed) work on WCG. Someone else can fill in the blanks. They do create some incentive, and I do mine Gridcoin myself, but I would still be here without that. |

I do recall XRP used WCG for distribution a few years back. More recently there was a token called Resistance, turned out to be a bit of a scam.
Gridcoin i think is the longest established and most stable coin using BOINC as a distribution method. |
