I'm having no luck on real hardware with 2004, VMs with 2004 (2 ISO releases) and 20H2. And I've seen the same errors, albeit only a few, on other 1903 systems but they are all still happy. Considering I've worked with BOINC for a lot of years and the install is too simple to screw up, I can't see that I'm doing anything wrong. Also, Windows doesn't block specific filetypes from download out of the box. More and more this is looking like a WCG server/CDN issue and not mine. But why only me so far?
I 've not played with CC_CONFIG.XML yet to capture the communications logging. I've also seen the URLs in the download log, but haven't tried to access them directly in a browser. I don't have that kind of free time, but I will try. If an admin is viewing this post, can you help? I've got lots of systems crunching for you, and want to keep that going. |

So after finally having the time to investigate, it turns out the download URL for the job files (http://s3.worldcommunitygrid.org/) was being blocked on our campus because of "hosting phishing" concerns (what our security folks said). The file download was being intercepted and a web page (explaining why the flies was blocked) was being downloaded instead, hence the consistent file size of 4915 (?) bytes I was seeing in the log.
Any new systems I add are downloading from http://s3.worldcommunitygrid.org/ which when I checked was at one point resolving to a "appdomain.cloud" address, but now is not (weird!). The appdomain.cloud address was the one(s) being blocked. The old systems are all working from https://download.worldcommunitygrid.org/ without troubles. The download block on my campus is being removed, but my biggest concern is that the s3 address will once again get blocked due to malicious users and stop my clients again. What can be done from WCG to prevent this? Can my clients be directed to use a different server? |
