I reimaged one of my systems because the Win 10 2004 upgrade failed dramatically. The new image is Win 10 2004, all my other systems are 1903. I setup an SCCM deployment package for 7.16.11 and installed that. But I noticed that no tasks were downloaded, they all say "download failed". The log shows many of the files are 0 bytes. These include the slideshow files, TGA, PNG, GIF and the EXEs. The stdoutdae.txt log shows many entries like this:
19-Jan-2021 09:34:17 [World Community Grid] Started download of mcm1_image05_7.41.tga 19-Jan-2021 09:34:17 [World Community Grid] Started download of mcm1_image06_7.41.tga 19-Jan-2021 09:34:17 [World Community Grid] File mcm1_image03_7.41.tga has wrong size: expected 4194348, got 0 19-Jan-2021 09:34:17 [World Community Grid] Checksum or signature error for mcm1_image03_7.41.tga 19-Jan-2021 09:34:17 [World Community Grid] File mcm1_image04_7.41.tga has wrong size: expected 1048620, got 0 19-Jan-2021 09:34:17 [World Community Grid] Checksum or signature error for mcm1_image04_7.41.tga 19-Jan-2021 09:34:18 [World Community Grid] Incomplete read of 4915.000000 < 5KB for mcm1_image05_7.41.tga - truncating 19-Jan-2021 09:34:18 [World Community Grid] Incomplete read of 4915.000000 < 5KB for mcm1_image06_7.41.tga - truncating 19-Jan-2021 09:34:18 [World Community Grid] Finished download of mcm1_image05_7.41.tga 19-Jan-2021 09:34:18 [World Community Grid] Finished download of mcm1_image06_7.41.tga 19-Jan-2021 09:34:18 [World Community Grid] Started download of mcm1_image07_7.41.tga 19-Jan-2021 09:34:18 [World Community Grid] Started download of mcm1_image08_7.41.tga 19-Jan-2021 09:34:18 [World Community Grid] File mcm1_image05_7.41.tga has wrong size: expected 4194348, got 0 19-Jan-2021 09:34:18 [World Community Grid] Checksum or signature error for mcm1_image05_7.41.tga 19-Jan-2021 09:34:18 [World Community Grid] File mcm1_image06_7.41.tga has wrong size: expected 262188, got 0 19-Jan-2021 09:34:18 [World Community Grid] Checksum or signature error for mcm1_image06_7.41.tga 19-Jan-2021 09:34:19 [World Community Grid] Incomplete read of 4915.000000 < 5KB for mcm1_image07_7.41.tga - truncating 19-Jan-2021 09:34:19 [World Community Grid] Incomplete read of 4915.000000 < 5KB for mcm1_image08_7.41.tga - truncating Note the plethora of "4915.0000000 < 5Kb". Any ideas? I already disabled Defender just in case. I'm using the same WCG profiles as before, all my other clients are on Windows 10 1903 with BOINC client 7.14.2. This is the first system with 7.16.11 and Windows 10 2004. |

I tried BOINC 7.16.11 on another Win 10 2004 system, same failure. Note I store my BOINC app files in D:\boincapp and the data in D:\boincdat, and use the service install.

As a final test I created a Win 10 2004 VM from ISO media, and I still have the same problem. This time BOINC is installed in C:\BOINCAPP and C:\BOINCDAT as a service. This is looking more and more like a Windows 2004 issue. Note my 2004 is from the latest media from Microsoft Volume License, the Dec 2020 refresh.

I took the 2004 media from May 2020 (original release) and re-created the VM, then patched to Dec 2020, and installed BOINC 7.16.11 from the installer (not my package), and I have the same problem: all jobs are failing to download, most files are 0 bytes. So this seems like a Windows 10 2004 issue, but I'm surprised that I can find nothing about it in these forums considering release 2004 has been out for 8 months.

I run Windows 10 successfully and currently use version 20H2 so I must have moved through 2004. Boinc is currently 7.16.11 installed as a service with the program in C:\program files\BOINC with the data in E:\BOINCdata.
This version of BOINC was updated 2 months before the update to version 20H2. |

I've used BOINC for a long time, and have been creating the deployment packages for the past few years. I can't explain why I'm getting this problem but nothing I do is working on 2004. I did notice that some of my other 1903 systems do show the occasional errors like above (truncating download, got 0) but are working. I've tried this in two different domains, and on two non-domain VMs using two revisions of the 2004 media. A high percentage of the files being downloaded are truncating at 0 bytes. I'm stumped!

OK, so I rebuilt the VM to 20H2, same problems. I opened some holes in the firewall for BOINC.EXE and BOINCMGR.EXE and disabled Defender, no change. A lot of the files do get downloaded, but definitely the images and executables don't. So PNG, GIF, TGA and the WCGRID* files are truncated to 0, but the slideshow, *.7z, *.tbl, and even the MCM*.txt comes in.
My head is hurting from pounding against this wall for so long! |

Try without the VM.

I seem to remember similar download problems within the last year or two but I am unable to find the thread using the search facility.
I believe the problem was with some files in some cloud distribution network locations so the problem did not affect all users. The techs provided a URL which forced downloads from WCG and bypassed the CDN. Another thing to try is to set flags within the ccconfig.xml file to provide the detail of the scheduler calls and network interactions. This produces masses of detail which is not intelligible to me but others may be able to see a problem. |

Can you access the PNGs & GIFs from a browser on the VM?
----------------------------------------This sounds like something is blocking access to them. Paul.
