AMD announced Ryzen 5000 today. The basic story is:
----------------------------------------- Same core/thread counts - Same power envelopes - Better latency and cache utilization due to move to 8 core CCX with 32MB unified L3 - 19% IPC uplift over Zen 2/Ryzen 3000 (41% over Zen 1/Ryzen 1000) - USD50 increase in MSRP across the board - No more included HSF for CPUs above 65W TDP I'm bummed about the removal of the included cooler, but I'm onboard with everything else. I have two machines currently using R7 2700s, and plan to upgrade those to 5900Xs as soon as possible. I'm keeping my 3900X nodes for now. Anybody else have upgrade plans? ![]() |

I will upgrade my Ryzen 1700 & 2700 to 3900X sooner or later. Once prices of these fall, I think they are the much better deal than Ryzen 5000.

I watched the announcement live and was disappointed they didn't mention Threadripper.
I guess with the GPUs and the 'mainstream' CPUs and the two gaming consoles launching at once it was too much to expect. That said, their newest CPU beats my 1950x so hopefully on average, more folks will be contributing with more cores. |

I think TR has always been announced a few months after the mainstream/desktop products. I'm sure it's coming. I feel like it's been too much of a success as a workstation CPU and a halo product for them to let it go away :) ![]() |

- USD50 increase in MSRP across the board So, USD50 means 50 US dollar and MSRP means Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price.- No more included HSF for CPUs above 65W TDP HSF is another thing. So far I've found Holland Science Fiction, Hispanic Scholarship Fund, Hard science fiction (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_science_fiction), and furthermore (from Wikipedia): "Han shot first", a phrase used when referring to a since altered scene in the first Star Wars movie Apparently it stands for 'Heat sink and fan' in this context. HSF is another thing. Had the same question. Kinda suspected. Now I know. BTW people are buying these for gaming. Right? Not just to do WCG stuff? [Edit 1 times, last edit by BobbyB at Oct 11, 2020 3:23:57 PM] |

BTW people are buying these for gaming. Right? Not just to do WCG stuff? If you mean globally, then yes, definitely. That's what most people seem to be planning to do with them, which surprises me a bit. These strike me as workstation-lite CPUs. You can buy a whole Xbox or PS5 for what a 5900X is gonna cost new. I can't say what others who are into WCG do with them. Speaking for myself: no, I don't game on my 3900Xs, and I won't be gaming on the 5900Xs. I game mostly on PS4, but do have a desktop built out of spare parts that I do some light duty PC gaming on. ![]() |

BTW people are buying these for gaming. Right? Not just to do WCG stuff? Yes, the goal of AMD with Zen 3 is to take over any advantage that the competition has for any kind of workload. That includes single core and multi-core performance, in addition to having the best instructions-per-clock. The only thing they are lacking now is pure maximum clock speed, but you don't necessarily need that because IPC will make up for lower clock speed in most cases. |
