I have a short question:
----------------------------------------Is there any overview on any commercially available medicine product(s) or clinical trial(s) (ongoing or completed; if so, please provide URLs to clinicaltrials.gov for review) which resulted from work performed in any of the many World Community Grid projects? It is very well known that there are numerous prestigous scientific papers available which are based on distributed computing projects. Still, we are often asked whether there are true medical applications available, too - especially since WCG, unlike many other distributed computing projects, has a lot of human disease-related projects in its portfolio. Best regards, Michael.

Commercially available medicines, none I've heard of.
----------------------------------------Of the medical projects I remember right now: Outsmart Ebola: Project finished and that was the last thing we heard about it. OpenZika: They found a compound that inhibits viral replication. No word on any clinical trials. The Dengue Project: IIRC, They identified some promising compounds and were eventually focused on 1 that they wanted to develop in order to begin human clinical trials but I think they either concluded it didn't work well or it wasn't better than available medicines. The Influenza Antiviral Drug Search was run by the same team and AFAIK, they never really analysed the data as they decided to focus on the Dengue project. Global Fight Against Malaria: Identified several compounds. I actually contacted Dr. Perryman a while ago (July) and he said the lack of funding did not allow testing of the compounds. However, at his previous job, he did manage to test some compounds that demonstrated activity against Tuberculosis (the project did work on TB as well, not just Malaria). I quote "They inhibited the purified TB enzyme but not the growth of the bacteria. It's a common problem." Drug Search for Leishmaniasis: None of the compounds worked. There is 1 project that was quite advanced but the COVID-19 pandemic put all the brakes on that, per the PI. WCG says they can only publish peer-reviewed papers on that so probably a long time till then. In the rest of the BOINC world, you have Rosetta@home, which contributed to the development of a cancer drug that is scheduled to start human clinical trials in H1 2021, IIRC. Commercially available medicines, none I've heard of. So, then the question is whether your notion is representative or not? ![]() How about some comments from the subproject leads? Michael.

I think we'd know if there was any drug available.
----------------------------------------I looked at all the completed medical projects with the goal of finding new drugs for a certain disease and I stand by what I said. You could e-mail each of the completed projects and ask. I've done that for a few over time. You could e-mail each of the completed projects and ask. I've done that for a few over time. It is VERY good that you took the time asking them. Do you know whether any of the project groups has filed any type of patents on any of the computational outcomes? Michael. P.S.: I am in here with distributed computing for fundamental research support, mainly. I do not expect those groups trying to find drug CANDIDATES to also go for clinical trials - that's a whole different story, I think. But to open that opportunity, it is important that the findings are made public in its entirety. What would be helpful, for example, would be a PUBLIC data repository holding the entire RAW data sets of all the projects: which compounds were docked aganst which targets using which programs and parameters? Why dock things again which others have docked before?

I do not.
----------------------------------------All WCG projects agree to sharing the WCG-generated data. Other researchers probably just have to ask. From memory, the data generated from Human Proteome Folding Project had a lot interest from other researchers. Yeah, here it is: "The HPF data have been shared through a few different websites since the beginning of the project. One of the key things about the project was that, before it finished, we were getting feedback that it was useful to other scientists. We had many citations from people using our function predictions. Collectively, I think the set of papers [about the HPF data] has around 40 or 50 citations." I suppose it's an idea that there would some kind of WCG server with all the data generated from its projects freely available for download (and maybe require a citation on any research papers that use the said data, mentioning the original project researchers as well as World Community Grid). But this may time the WCG techs simply don't have. Hello everybody,
very important thread, in my view. We should return to this after one or two years, and then again and again. All the best, stay in good mood. MS |
