Live CD

I finally found a way to make a boinc “live cd” and then realized that you don’t want to use one!
[ Can you say duuuuuh???? ]

A cd with an OS and Boinc setup on it sounds great, plop it in a optical drive and let it go right?

Wrong, the problem is power failures/shut down. Since the entire works OS, ram drive, boinc, temp files and work units are in ram, you loose it all on shut down.

Even if the ram drive, OS and boinc are set back up automatically you’ve still lost all the work units.
This means after a certain amount of time, the boinc server will finally realize that you didn’t do the work units and have to re-assign them.

This could delay other work on that project.
This is also why setting up your OS and boinc on a flash drive is much better.
Power failure or reboot won’t destroy the work units as they reside on the flash drive.

Re: Live CD

Every so often people get on here and want to know about a live cd or dvd and post the question if there is such a thing and can they get one.

Re: Live CD

Yep, that would work, but why not just buy a $5 flash drive and be done with it?
