G'day
Was wondering what is the normal processing time for work unit/task, I have been running this for over 68 hours and it is still stuck on .4 percent, at this rate I am not accomplishing very much, it is extremely slow compared to SETI, and I am running it on a Athlon 1000 with 512 Megs ram. Cheers Charles |

Hi,
the time to complete a workunit varies greatly but this seems a bit out off line. You can terminate a workunit the hard way by ending the process ud_######.exe (##### is a bunch of numbers) in the taskmanager. This should force a new download. Of course you will get no points for this. Hope this helps, Steve |

Thanks Red Dragon, I did fix the problem by going to the task manager and setting the priority form the default low to high, it jumped from .4 percent to 2.5 percent in about and hour.

Man, If that process finished, that would have broken a new record and would have made a LOT of points... yep...

hi ,Charles
i am a new comer too and have just use the software for one day. As far as i know, the software will work only when your cpu is not so busy. When your pc is overraning with other programs, the WCG software barely works. That maybe the reason why you have run over 60 hours but it only proceeded 4% |

The WCG related software runs at a very low priority. That is, it defers to all other programs that are running. It does this so that your computer interacts with you just the way it did prior to you adding the WCG software.
----------------------------------------The WCG related software is designed to kind of "melt into the background" and soak up all the left-over processor time. This is why you can run it all the time your computer is running and not even notice that it is there. Now if you artificially raise the priority of the software, that means that it will run to the exclusion of other pieces of code that need to run to do other things. Sometimes these other pieces of code do things like . monitor and accept data coming in off the network . monitor and accept keystrokes from the keyboard . move the mouse pointer on the screen in relation to the physical movement of the mouse . make sure that the data from the last write statement to the disk actually gets written You get the picture. There are lots of processes on your computer as you can see by using the alt-ctrl-del and these processes are generally necessary for the smooth and reliable operation of the computer. If you raise the priority of the WCG software above the priority of these, you are likely to cause yourself problems and possibly make your computer unstable. If you do not raise it that high but do raise it higher than your browser or email package or whatever, these programs will get “sluggish” and unpleasant to use. It is for these and other reasons that the WCG people and others that understand operating systems do not recommend changing the priority of the WCG related software. That having been said, you could have other problems: It is possible that you can have some other processes running on your computer that soak up a lot of time and keep the processor busy so that the WCG software does not get much, if any, time. In this case, you need to look at what that or those processes are and see if they are necessary or even desirable. Often one finds that there are Trojans or "Adware" processes in one's machine that are causing such behavior. I suggest that if that is the case, you get one of the "Ad-Aware " type programs and scan your computer. There are a lot of other programs out there that hunt these Trojans and other mallware down and kill them. Ad-Aware is one “Spybot search and destroy ” is another.. I am not an expert on these but I do use those two and they seem to work. Another product is the Microsoft AntiSpyware that seems to be good from limited experience with it. All of the above either have free versions or are free for now anyway. The bottom line in all this is that if you have to raise the priority of the WCG software in order to get it to make progress, you probably have other problems on the computer that you need to address. Raising the priority of the WCG may temporarily mask the problem but it will not cure it and is likely to cause problems ranging from minor irritations to major instability and data integrity problems. ![]() This post deserves to be put in the Community Maintained FACs Do you mind if I present it on your behalf One point to mention: There is a bata 1 version of Microsoft AntiSpyware that can be found at: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx I have found it to be 100% stable so far and it is free at present It also found malware that my other AntiSpyware programs missed You may want to consider including this in your article Best Regards |

Sure you can use it in any way you wish. I would be honored to have it added to the FAQ. I have downloaded the Microsoft product you mentioned and and have updated the text. I had already put the text of the post on my unofficial site . It is now updated with my experience (as is the above post..I have edited it) and you are welcome to take it as is or modify it as you see fit..
