Re: Best 'BANG' For GPU Installation ...

Ampere looks interesting, but it could be many months wait (next year?) for the mid range 3060 level of cards to come out. From a cost and heat point of view, the mid rangers are usually the sweet spot... but while we wait Covid19 casualties are increasing each day.

That makes good sense. I'll hold off buying until WCG's GPU client is out. No point to rush when there's nothing to run on it yet.

Re: Best 'BANG' For GPU Installation ...

Yes, GPU support is coming. There is both CUDA and OpenCL support for the application, whether both will run, I guess we don't know yet. Their GitHub page does say CUDA is a faster than OpenCL at that time.

Re: Best 'BANG' For GPU Installation ...

It was maybe a good idea, but not well fitting with the today market: i.e. there is no modern GPU available with an old PCIe x16 interface.

When GPU compliant projects will be available, would it be a good idea to "recycle" old hosts /mainboard installing on it a new GPU?
I think for example about 2 Athlon II x4 boards (1* PCIe x16, 1* PCIe x1, 2* PCI), I did replace in 2019. Initially, I guessed that the MB have problem but it seems that they are still OK.
With a new power supply and one of the recent GPU board, those MB could maybe have a second life thinking
In this case, I need to find some well fitting computer cases.

Re: Best 'BANG' For GPU Installation ...

Thanks to all. Sign me up for the GPU Compute OpenCL beta/roll-out.

I got Milkyway@Home up and running (and shut down!) while plowing through the BOINC directory/subs and configuration files. I gots a load of tuning which with to play ... so I blame you all tongue

I got BAM installed (good or bad?) and I'm running v7.14.2. In projects, clicked-off new tasks to wind down my Milkyway@Home to upgrade to x.14.3. Any recommendations? Should I install over top or clear my BOINC directory? Keep my Win 7-64, or go for a 'Nix?

Any CPU OC gain seems marginal at best. With the new Projects/Tasks I'll work on some under-clocking/volting and tweak that Fury GPU. In 20hrs I got "80,000" or so -- not sure of total WUs, or what that score really means - LOL

AND (finally!), Is there a more appropriate thread where I may ask questions instead of bumping this thread up?

That makes good sense. I'll hold off buying until WCG's GPU client is out. No point to rush when there's nothing to run on it yet.

Welll . . . My advice would be to keep an eye on the RX 570/80/90s if the price goes lower - if you are into OpenCL GPU Compute. These are a few of the last 'GCN' cards with hefty FP32 / FP64 performance at a reasonable price.

There are PCI Express X1-X4 to X16 (video card) slot adapters typically used for crypto-mining, if you are looking to build a low-budget multi-GPU cruncher. I suspect there are even regular PCI and USB -- X16 adapters, too.
