Dear all,
----------------------------------------As a new user, I've always been curious about the following points: 1. Are WCG media releases solely managed by the IBM 'corporate' media team? 2. Do WCG team members (non-IBM) have the authority to send media releases or engage with the media in any capacity? 3. Does the WCG team generally wish they could engage with the media on a larger scale to increase users? Could be as simple as just sending media releases a bit more often. Hypothetically speaking, if WCG staff are allowed to contact the media independently, they could request a media contact list from the IBM media team. Usually, media teams use media release distribution software which cover many countries and a vast scope of media outlets, journalists or even influencers. The purpose of this post is to: 1. See if there are ways to further increase coverage without spending any money - using existing resources. 2. Use coverage attained from media releases as a reference point for future community engagement across a broader scope. It never hurts to have more media features. I've only seen WCG mentioned around 10 times in Australian online media over the past 12 months (excluding social). I wish this were 100 times higher! For context - I work in the media monitoring industry in Australia, hence asking out of professional habit. I have some Australian media lists from my old public relations days. If this is of interest, who would be best to contact at WCG? Absolutely love this community's work and keen to see this fantastic initiative spread as wide as possible during such unprecedented times! Media coverage seems to be a big issue for WCG and BOINC projects in general. There was more coverage discussing the announcement of OpenPandemics than there's been articles since its launch. It's a shame - and I do hope that IBM and the WCG team can find a way to promote it that won't cost it more money. It would be great if they did spend money promoting it - but if it isn't necessary...
----------------------------------------MCM had a 2 minute cameo on Canadian local news last year - but it focused on a kid visiting their lab - there was less than 20 seconds discussing the work, nor any mention of how viewers at home could participate easily, and help fight cancer. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by yoerik at Jun 21, 2020 6:52:22 AM] |

Thanks yoerik fir the heads up.
I took this into my own hands and pitched WCG to the media using the old school email send outs to Newsdesks from my personal email. I have a journalist trying to feature WCG in a website and trying to automatically add add WCG websites updates into an RSS-like section. Who is the best contact at WCG when it comes to contacting the media queries from journalists? I can forward the email through. Many thanks! P.S. the site that wants to feature a live RSS of all WCG updates is: https://tagg.com.au/ I've sent this story tip quite wide and far, so you may get quite a few forwards from me! |

With the GPU client in development there are conflicting interests at play. Techs/admin spoke of a readiness for an 8 times influx or something of members for this project. Imagine all the investment and then being done in 3 months... The actual influx was WCG internal with a member resource shift and but a few thousand new members from what i saw. No rush, a new H1N1 found is underway which might become OPN2 soon. A flu after all.

We'd be getting ahead of the curve. Good news, just been contacted by another journalist.
----------------------------------------Important question - who at WCG can I forward these media/journalist enquiries to? I'm getting quite a few responses! If I don't get a specific contact I'll direct them to: https://newsroom.ibm.com/2020-04-01-Your-Comp...0pd_wv46YZsOuHl_MlzT3GhPQ Media Contact: Ari Fishkind, IBM media relations fishkind@us.ibm.com ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jul 1, 2020 1:14:37 AM] |

https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/viewContactUs.do they can select "request for media" - but if that's not the right place, directing them to IBM's media relations will mean they will direct them to the right place.

Thanks yoerik, I've just sent a query to the site's 'request for media' section - excited to see how this plays out.

I discovered earlier today an article on the Raspberry Foundation about WCG and RPi support:
----------------------------------------https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/ibm-world-community-grid/ It will be interesting to observe if more RPi join WCG and support actively the projects. Cheers, Yves --- PS: I am currently writing an article (in French) about WCG for the Raspberry Pi blog of a colleague ![]() |
