The one I posted was the high end. There are lower cost versions but still seem high priced. Building one with a desktop chips still seems best way. Was lazy and was looking for an alternative.

I've been running a NUC8i5BEK strictly for WCG since August of 2019. I bought the NUC kit because I wanted to work with the hardware. It's a solid little machine that I run with Linux. For me, it's a great little machine.
----------------------------------------As mentioned, thermal control is an issue. I won't run it the next 3 months. I have a great aluminum cooling pad with fans that I sit the NUC on, and that helps by up to 10 degrees F. My workroom is not air conditioned and I do make bios adjustments and could run all year, but I have an issue with the number of computers I can run at any one time so I will just let it sit during the hot months. This was the mid-range unit at the time with a quad-core, 8 thread processors. It is a fairly productive little unit and I like it a lot. Agreed. The 8 series i5 was the sweet spot for performance/dollar/watt in a small form factor. I got mine for a little over $300, new. I wouldn't shell almost double that for 4 more threads and a slightly more powerful processor.
