Hi all,
----------------------------------------I hope everyone is well in the turbulent times we're all facing at the moment. Just a quick question about one of my BOINC clients. I'm running WCG on 5 machines at the moment (2 windows, 2 android and 1 Mac). Recently the Mac has been finishing tasks and instead of reporting them soon after they're done and retrieving a new task, they're often just sitting there in the 'ready to report' state until I force a manual client update for the project. Over night, they don't seem to do this - I think eventually they do it themselves, but over the last couple of days, I've had them just sat there for up to 3 hours sometimes. This isn't a deal breaker as they still upload no problem when the time comes, I just find it odd that all of a sudden this is happening. The only thing I could think of is that the task cache seems to be full and it's not pulling new WUs after each is uploaded (it seems that I'm just getting a bulk amount every 24-36 hours). Could it be that because it isn't needing to ask for a new one, it isn't triggering the report of the current one? Like I say, it's uploading as soon as it's done, just not reporting... The Mac is the only one (so far that I'm having this issue on) - the androids are ticking away and it seems to be pretty much a 'one out, one in' system, and I've only set up the window machines today so I'm not sure if they'll behave like this too. Sorry that this wasn't so short in the end! I hope someone can help with this - thank you if you can! :) Chris ![]() ![]() ![]() |

The behavior you detail is entirely normal. Completed tasks are reported when the scheduling algorithm decides it is time for new tasks. There is no need to monitor the activity as closely as you do. As you indicate, it does what it is supposed to do overnight. If you wait long enough in the daytime, you will see the tasks get reported in a timely fashion.

Cheers, Sgt, Joe :)
----------------------------------------Thought it would be the case, I just couldn't help thinking it was that something was off given that this has only just happened in the last couple of days. But in that time, I've also switched from 'No work allowed', only switching to allow when it was time to completely refill the cache, to now just having it constantly on 'allow' so new tasks come in as needed (Not sure why I even bothered doing it the other way - it doesn't make sense!) Add this line to the <options> section of cc_config.xml and there's no waiting, that is at most 2:01 minutes enforced back off
<report_results_immediately>1</report_results_immediately> The pushed reporting also kicks a re-check if more work can be added to the additional buffer, the 'while you're here' approach. |

That'd be perfect! Thank you :) Don't suppose you know how to get to the cc_config on Mac, do you?

Chris The 'ready to report' phrase means Boinc has sent a report back to the Project that you have successfully completed the workunit and are ready to upload the results, the Project then marks the unit as completed and no need to send it out to someone else, with 2 or more factor checking, and is just waiting for the next time your pc regularly checks in either for new tasks or to report another completed work unit. All this takes time to open a port, send the data check it tell your Boinc that it's done and then close the port to get ready for the next person. Instead of doing ALL that everytime they try to only do a quick 'ok thanks' and then move onto the next person trying to connect to the Server. There are only so many ports and so much cpu time the Server can give to you without taking time away from me and everyone else also trying to connect, so combining things is better if it can. ![]() ![]() |

I'll have a fiddle in a bit then :) But that's not essential then - will just speed up getting new tasks? Might not need it then as I do already have a backlog of about 3 days - I just like to keep it as full as possible :)

The chief reason this exists is for part time crunchers to have tasks reported before shutdown and those who re image frequently. Those using a BOINC time of day scheduling already have the automated benefit as the RRI function kicks in 30 minutes before the scheduled time-frame ends. Chiefly today the re-purpose is mostly to hunt rare work since a fetch request is included and have everything reported by the end of the statistics day for those jockeying for rankings.
