I just came across this page on the BOINC website. Seems like WCG is not favored by the top 100 users. Most of them run Collatz Conjecture and very few of them run WCG. Why? What's the problem with these people? Is math mystery more important than treating cancer, AIDS or Covid-19? I get it if they chose Rosetta@Home. At least it's a project of bio-science. But Collatz Conjecture? Seriously?

Curious. I guess that most of this crunchers don't know WCG yet and are focused on Math, probably !

Last I checked which was a long while ago, Collatz Conjecture supported AMD GPUs which other of the projects do also?

Without doubts that GPUs do much more work per core that simple CPUs, and since long time ago WCG don1t have any Project supporting GPU1s. Additionaly for some math applications and calculations, the way that could be used GPU1s to acelerate processing efforts, is more quick than others. So, math application, running over a cliente that run in GPU1s and for a Project designed for quick evalutaions using GPU1s, probably will perfome much better and more than in any other kind of Project. Maybe more coincidences but I don't believe.

I guess that the boinc participants considered in such survey are at the same time people who are more focused on credit hunting.
----------------------------------------Since WCG is not very generous regarding credits - and in some cases really project dependant - strong boinc participants are maybe less interested to support WCG projects. On my side, I am an WCG only member, the credit discrepancy between WCG and the rest of the world does not impact me. It is just an assumption. Cheers, Yves |

Additionally:
----------------------------------------If you take a look on the computational power, the best WCG contributor - Marist College - provides about 35'000 Gflops only with CPU. At the other side, the top 38 boinc participants considered in the survey are delivering more than Marist College; some of them far over 200'000 Gflops (#1 delivers about 540'000 Gflops). It is only possible with an heavy use of GPU. |

Honestly I don't think going off the top 100 BOINC participants is a good measure, statistically. We'd need a much large sample size, preferably one that isn't weighted. For example, what projects are the top 100,000 volunteers contributing towards?

This is not a mystery. Many crunchers are chasing points for one reason or another. WCG is the usually the worst for this.
----------------------------------------I crunch for team gridcoin that allows me to mine gridcoin at the same time. If I want to optimize I need to choose a project where points are high and I can be one of the top contributors. To optimize this, requires constant analysis and switching around a lot to stay on top. I am currently crunch wcg but only because I lost interest in optimizing and want to contribute to something I personally think will do the most good. ![]() |

If the "top 100" is based only on credits, then it's obvious. Collatz gives out a ridiculously high amount of points for not much work compared to other projects. I crunched Collatz in the Gridcoin pool for a while, and my little GPU had amassed almost 300 million points in a short amount of time (while also crunching SETI and Einstein).
My 4 million BOINC points for WCG are worth far more than 300 million points in Collatz. @B2I I don't think it matters to Gridcoin how many points a project gives relative to other projects. You compete for a share of the points on a per-project basis. You figure out where you can contribute the largest share. |
