WCG 7.14.2 problems new Mac Air Catalina 10.15.4

Hi all. I have a brand new Mac Air and downloaded and installed WCG. It runs horribly. I have it set to run full tilt (like all my other machines), set the power options so the laptop will not sleep, ac power, and after 30+ mins or so I will come back and find Boinc is frozen (meaning the progress and elapsed times are not moving in the Advanced View). Sometimes when I come back there is an odd popup message stating that the Boinc app is trying to connect with the local system (I will get the exact message when it happens) and I can either Quit Boinc or Cancel. If I cancel, Boinc unfreezes and starts to crunch again.

Some of the elapsed times are 8-11 hours and still have 2+ hours to go. But those were not the times when the work units started...when they started they stated about 2.5 hours. So it's as if the units are crunching but terribly slow. Activity monitor shows that WCG is using 90% or more CPU so I'm stumped.

This seems to only happen after the screen has been idle for an hour or longer ...but the fan is still running like mad so it seemingly is doing something. It's not the power options because the machine is not asleep.

I've tried rebooting and that does not help. The Mac Air has the i7 chip and it's only returning about 8 results a day. So something is stalling/failing. The odd thing is that the fan is constantly running so it should be crunching.

I have this running on dozens of Windows machines and a few other Macs and they all run fine crunching 24x7. The 2nd most recent Mac I have is the late 2017 iMac.

I have enabled all the log features and waiting for this to happen again and will post the log in a few hours.

Any ideas? I'm not a Mac guru...so if you want me to check something on the Mac, please tell me exactly where to go/what to do. Thanks in advance!!

I am not a MAC guy either, but I suspect with the fan running full tilt and the crunching being very slow is you are having heat problems and the machine is throttling itself. The MAC air is a thin machine and like many laptops it is not designed to run 100% at full throttle.
Good luck.
Cheers

Hi Sgt. Joe. Yes, I was thinking the same thing but forgot to put in my opening post. I know a lot of thin laptops do this, especially Lenovo. It's a real shame/crime they can throttle while at the same time telling me I can have a fast i7 chip! My guess is the Mac starts throttling within a minute of WCG running at 100% (and I know Lenovo's definitely do!)

I'm running it at 50% CPU but 100% useage and will see how it looks tomorrow afternoon. If it's still crummy, I may return the machine. I didn't buy it soley for crunching but if it's going to throttle when I push it, I don't want it. I can either buy a Macbook Pro (not sure it throttles as quickly) or a plain old non-thin laptop like the Lenovo P53 or P73 machines that do not throttle and are designed to be workstation replacements.

Thanks, all and I will reply tomorrow and also include the log.
