Re: Questions about work units and badges for OpenPandemics (launch TBA)

Adding a 19 into the badge would interfere with the number of years for Diamond badges. Can always use a different colour for different pandemics in future.

Could we have a consistent font and border? The last 2 projects didn't go well for OCD people. Microbiome is lacking the square border. And the African Rainfall has a different font and size for the number of years.

Hi Merowig,

Here's a preview of the badge design for OpenPandemics - COVID-19:

Many thanks,
Juan

Hello Juan

it looks good!
Many thanks for sharing!

Re: Questions about work units and badges for OpenPandemics (launch TBA)

The 19 in the middle is an interesting idea, but I wonder how confusing it will be with the number of years in the diamond badge. Not to mention that this is being set up for more than COVID-19; it's supposed to be for multiple future pandemics. Emphasizing the 19 so strongly will undermine that messaging.

Ahh of course - forgot about the diamond badges. And that it won't just be for Covid. Good point.

I'm just thinking - a lot of people (for better or worse) will likely be attracted to the project solely because it is Covid-related. Is there anyway to somehow distinguish that from future pandemics? Would doing so even be a good idea? I don't know - just thinking out loud here, so would love to hear what others think on that.

I agree with this comment...seperating Pandemic crunching into their own Project is better than making one badge for ALL of them. WCG has 2 badges for Childhood Cancer, a badge for Cancer Markers and a badge for Help Conquer Cancer...they are ALL Cancer yet each has it's own badge. I think seperating the Pandemics would make it easier to attract crunchers sort of like Folding@home and Rosetta did. You could also call it the 'Corona Virus' Badge like you did with the Influenza, Ebola and Zika badges.

In short people LOVE badges and rolling everything into one badge now is alot like closing the barn door after the horses are already in the next Country!!

Re: Questions about work units and badges for OpenPandemics (launch TBA)

I think that is why Juan said that the badge is for OpenPandemics - COVID-19, and the badge itself is SARS-CoV-1/2. Presumably, for the next pandemic they would add a new badge for the new phase of the project with a representation of the pathogen causing that pandemic.

So it'll be more like a 'head project' with sub-projects of sorts, each with their own badge, for each pandemic/pathogen studied in the future?

Re: Questions about work units and badges for OpenPandemics (launch TBA)

This is at least the third CoronaVirus pandemic and there will probably be more. WCG need to do whatever gains them the most new members (or returning old members).

Presumably they have a definition of what constitutes a new project rather than a second phase of an old project. I assume MCM is one project because it is continuous although they seem to progress from one cancer to another.

That is my understanding. OpenPandemics will focus on SAR-CoV-1/2 in terms of our computations, but will also create the tools needed for scientists to quickly spin up new OpenPandemics projects, as well as more easily analyze the results of our computations.
