angry Throughput Throttled Until a Storage Space Solution is Found

With multiple projects at less then full capacity or suspended, with the most powerful project using fairly little storage space per work unit and with the backing of IBM (Market Cap: $140,000,000,000) why is the ARP being throttled with no storage space to spare?

If Bloomberg can spend several million a day trying to buy the Presidency, certainly IBM can afford a few petabytes of storage. not talking

I don't the first thing has anything to do with the second thing!

But if you know Bloomberg, you could ask him to pitch in. wink

IBM are supporting WCG as they think it may give them a "feel good factor" and the money may come from the advertising budget.
By not supporting WCG enough there may start a "feel bad factor". Perhaps WCG should approach someone else - Intel could use a better image at the moment the way AMD are kicking them with the delay in 10nm, or Microsoft, Apple, Amazon and Google have deep pockets.

To IBM the WCG project is research, a test bench itself with big payback of tangible and intangible nature, but opposed to big Mike they are on a budget.

You are free at spending other people's money. Have you started your own fund yet?

I offered to send them a stack of spinners. Still waiting for a reply.

Yes, I use my own money to buy high end equipment well above my means and make lifestyle cuts to keep it sustainable - I give a giant damn about TB/Cancer, AIDS, etc.
What other people spend on gas and cars and insurance, I take the bus and pay high electric bills.

If you're financially comfortable, you're not generous enough.

Three points.

First, everyone take a step back and breathe. We all have strong opinions and personal priorities but we don't have a mandate to dictate what others' priorities should be. It's kinda funny to make comparisons to wealthy people with no connection to the project, but let's not do it to each other.

Second, Dayle, I understand that your contributions to WCG are enormously important to you for likely very personal reasons. Given that, I can understand your defensive reaction to what Jim said. In general, good on you for donating what you can and for caring. You've structured your life around donating as much computer time as you can, and that's your prerogative. If you're able to make it work despite the obvious stress it puts you under, awesome. But judging others for living a "comfortable" life and donating less isn't a good road to go down. Not to mention what people consider "comfortable" will vary from person to person. Live and let live, alright?

Finally, I understand the frustration in the community about throttling and whatnot. But give this stuff some time to work itself out. Even minor issues get bogged down in bureaucracy when you have a giant mutinational corp on one end, and an academic institution at the other. Both have several layers of systems for decisions to go through before they get approved. Gotta understand that it may take some time to get everything approved and implemented. Where funding is an issue, things get ten times more complicated, too. Things will also generally be slower right now due to health scares going through several countries. If we were at the 6 month or 1 year mark, I'd get it. But when a brand new project is barely two months in? Let's just say I'm not surprised biggrin

eh...no. I respect your point of view about giving till it hurts, but expecting everybody else to do it is not rational. In my book this is a volunteer project that is supposed to take advantage of our spare computer cycles. I contribute a little more leaving my computer on when I'm not working on it. We all give what we consider to be fair and to our means. With that said, let's all go crunch biggrin

Re: Throughput Throttled Until a Storage Space Solution is Found

Why just "spare" computing time??? That's a complete fallacy.

Recent WCG Results Returned by some portion of 766,075 members including agregators CharityEngine123, BOID, & grcpool123.
Top -- Results Returned -- Percent of Total
10 ------ 275,067 -- 22%
25 ------ 347,611 -- 27%
50 ------ 397,884 -- 31%
100 ---- 453,742 -- 36%
250 ---- 534,629 -- 42%
All -- 1,265,129

Only 5,000 members are reported in the Global Statistics. The 5,000th member returned 40 results. Clearly of the 766,075 members only a fraction actually returned results, maybe 25,000 members. A cum plot would look like a step function near zero.

(No idea what all the Anonymous zero results entries mean.)
