Hi,
----------------------------------------I had this idea that WCG was just a very low paying project in terms of points for achieved tasks but now it looks like the numbers being reported on sites such as BoincStats.com or Free-DC.org (identical values) are significantly lower than the points for me on my WCG stats page. I have checked a few of my other supported projects and the numbers within the projects and these external stat sites match. So I wondered what was happening in WCG with the results. Stats Summary: WCG Stats points 2,153,015 Rank 86,463 BoincStats/Free-DC points 307,601 Rank 57,041 I have read the WCG Help topics in this so I understand about the point equalisation mechanics and then afterwards applying the x7 multiplier but why not export the final WCG value of the points to external sites? There could well be the benefit for attracting more project supporters as maybe those chasing points as well as choosing a worthwhile project would add WCG to their list. Also, when you look at multi-project stats then you can correctly view your WCG achievement in relation to others. Thanks. Help Topic: For Info "Why are points on the agent and the web different? World Community Grid in the past ran two types of agents. A United Devices (UD Windows) agent and a BOINC (Windows/Linux/Mac) agent. Today, World Community Grid only runs the BOINC agent. Points contributed by both of the agents will be part of a member's total on the website. However, only points contributed by BOINC agents will be shown on the BOINC agents. The points previously earned by a UD agent only appear on the website. Additionally, due to differences in how the agents computed points, BOINC points are multiplied by 7 when they are imported into the website. Thus if you earned 5 BOINC points, you will see 35 website points." Edit: Typo [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Feb 24, 2020 5:18:04 AM] |

7 'legacy' WCG points are deemed computational equivalent to 1 BOINC credit. In order to be able to show the old agent earned points and boinc credits in one stat, the boinc credits are multiplied by the noted factor.
This started when both agents ran concurrent, which has not been the case now for probably 12-13 years. WCG could actually divide the legacy points computed by the old agent and do away them, but they have not. Why? It's a 64,000 USD question. |

Thanks for the info, I was not fully aware of the history.
----------------------------------------I do think however, when right now WCG is about the lowest paying points project in Boinc that if they used and exported the WCG website final stats then they would attract more supporters. In the end, I see there are two goals in supporting Boinc projects, something worthwhile that has a relevance to yourself and secondly the recognition of your support whether it be with Badges, Ranking or Points this is the the effective feedback from the project in answer to your support. EDIT: Supplementary Collatz Project is well known to give a large amount of points for the computing time. I do not think I exaggerate but I guess it is nearer 100x more that the amount given by WCG for similar numerical computational effort. This does not mean it is wrong, it is just an example to show the 2 extremes, WCG and Collatz. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Feb 24, 2020 6:29:51 PM] |
