Re: Work Available

That is the best guess that I can come up with, too.

However, it is probably time to introduce generation 142, unless they are intending to have a go at the many stuck units.

Re: Work Available

I don't know the back-end infrastructure or BOINC systems that well, but are there manual (or scripted) ways to release older generations? I mean, all of them, including 021 and 022. Surely there's a way to manually release them +/- if that process works, write a script to automate it. And coordinate that with the release of fresh newer generations in a controlled manner.

And even if you did, I understand the WCG server code is a very highly customised version of the BOINC server code. In many ways I wish they had taken the opportunity to go back to the vanilla version used by many other projects.

+1. I've been holding my breath for years now, you can call me Papa Smurf with how blue I am.

I went from distributed.net to United Devices (same team?) and stuck with UD/grid.org even when IBM first launched WCG, because I wanted to keep my stats. In hindsight, I should've created a WCG account immediately to get more badges tongue

But IBM/WCG still started with the UD client before adopting BOINC and set up so many stinky customizations that deviated from vanilla BOINC. I'd give anything for a major project to undo it all. I'd love a Server Stats page, getting rid of "WCG points (which are just 7x BOINC points), a way to merge duplicate devices, and some other basic BOINC things. And a migration to a forum software that isn't obsolete (and likely full of security vulnerabilities) that allows @tagging and messaging and 2FA. Or even supporting Daylight Savings/Summer Time!

*continues turning blue*

Edited to Add: But back to the topic... even with BOINC custom stuff, I still think there would be a way to script and automate stuff like this and sending commands to the feeders and work servers.. It probably just takes time and testing, which WCG does not have.

Re: Work Available

They are already just releasing old generations. They are restricting units to generations up to 141 when there 24,000 waiting to be sent out in generations 142 to 146.

There are nearly 800 units stuck in extreme or accelerated generations, including the 3 ultras in generations 21 & 22.

I am hoping that the slowdown of units available means that they are going to try to get the stuck units moving.

Otherwise they could be releasing the 21,000 units in generation 142.

Re: Work Available

Truthfully I think there already exists an automated way to release ARPs, but I think they aren't using it because they are having hardware issues and are restricting the flow of WUs right now.

Re: Work Available

It would be nice to have someone from the staff elaborate on what the problems are and the plans moving forward. Savas was browsing this thread several days ago but evidently didn't feel the need to comment.

There is, and that is why some extremes got so far behind. More and more newbies were released so the stuck units got further and further behind.

Most have now caught up to be in range of the leaders. However nearly all of the remaining extremes and accelerated are stuck. Something needs to be done about them.

Re: Work Available

Mike when you say "something needs to be done about them" do you know "what needs doing to them"?

I did my part by returning ARP1_0016723_141_2 yesterday and it turned valid as soon as I returned it. Task ending _1 was a "no reply"
