Electric Power Consumption

I remember during the SETI @ home days of considering to build a small Farm of old unused PCs to sit and just process. I was engaged in a conversation with someone back then about the issue of 'cost of electricity' vs. power of cpu. Basically if a cpu is on the lower end then it could not be worth actually running because of cost of electricity and how inefficient the chip is.

Does anyone know anything about this sort of thing? LIke how much more a month should we expect to see our power bills considering this thing will be running all night long at 100%. I would have to think you would notice a difference. Also what is the lowest CPU speed still considered worth while for processing. I may try and build another FARM for this project.

Thanks

Re: Electric Power Consumption

Seasonic has a little device called the "Power Angel" that you can plug between your computer and the wall to measure electrical consumption. I too would like to see some measurements of electrical consumption based on different platforms. I might invest in one. If I do, I'll let you know how the AMD xp's do on power. :-) Hopefully some others here will do the same.
I think the best processor would be the dothan (Pentium M used in Centrinos)... it uses just a trickle of electricity compared to the PIVs and even the 90nm AMD 64s. Of course, the cost of the dothan chip is prohibitively expensive as are the desktop boards designed to run one. But I digress...

While I'm sure you could figure out theoretical power usage, there's nothing like seeing the actual amount being used, due to video cards, fans, etc.

Re: Electric Power Consumption

Your power consumption is limited by the power supply in your pc. Look at it's rating. Better yet, it's winter, just consider it an extra heater. Your house furnace will run less ! This is a charitable cause, no glamour, no rewards, just maybe a chance to help mankind. As for your farm, DO IT!
I have 6 old machines here, and one by one I am adding them. I't does not matter if it takes a day or a week to process one unit. it ALL needs to be done, one clock cycle at a time.
