Hello!
----------------------------------------I'm posting this in a few places around the web to try and figure out this issue. I'm having one of the strangest issues I've yet come across in using boinc. I'm attempting to run it on a topjoy falcon with an Intel Pentium j5005 silver. I know, not the most powerful CPU out there by far, but I've ran this on Atom processors with far worse specs. What seems to happen is the installation proceeds as normal up until the client displays the list of projects. At this point, no projects are displayed - and attempting to click cancel and event manager in the advanced view nets me 0 results, as the client and manager are not seeming to be able to connect to each other. connecting to localhost is being shown at the bottom of the screen. Restarting does not fix the issue. Attempting to disable windows firewall (even though it's on the local computer) did not fix anything, not that I thought it would. Even disabling windows defender, again, despite this program working on countless other windows 10 installs without changing these settings. I then attempted to run Boinc 7.14.2 x64 with administrative privileges by right clicking and clicking on run as administrator, even though UAC was disabled and I was already an administrator. I have tried reinstalling, being sure to remove the pertinent app data and program files completely. I'm at an absolute loss as to what to do. Oddly enough, The running processes appear only to be Boincmgr.exe and boinctray.exe, and when attempting to run boinc.exe from program files it throws up a bunch of information in the terminal before closing. I'm not sure which log files to look at to see what exactly is going on. This is the first time this has happened and it's got me completely stumped. This isn't anything special, just Windows 10 home 64 bit. It's got plenty of storage and ram. There is no odd programs that have been installed, no bloatware, no odd driver issues. Any help is appreciated. I did come across this in a log, though. It does not seem to be having any issues. Attached, too, is the screenshot showing the list (or lack thereof) of projects. 21-Aug-2019 16:48:32 [---] cc_config.xml not found - using defaults 21-Aug-2019 16:48:32 [---] Starting BOINC client version 7.14.2 for windows_x86_64 21-Aug-2019 16:48:32 [---] log flags: file_xfer, sched_ops, task 21-Aug-2019 16:48:32 [---] Libraries: libcurl/7.47.1 OpenSSL/1.0.2g zlib/1.2.8 21-Aug-2019 16:48:32 [---] Data directory: C:\ProgramData\BOINC 21-Aug-2019 16:48:32 [---] Running under account tcwoo 21-Aug-2019 16:48:32 [---] OpenCL: Intel GPU 0: Intel(R) UHD Graphics 605 (driver version 26.20.100.6813, device version OpenCL 1.2 NEO, 3205MB, 3205MB available, 115 GFLOPS peak) 21-Aug-2019 16:48:32 [---] OpenCL CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) Silver J5005 CPU @ 1.50GHz (OpenCL driver vendor: Intel(R) Corporation, driver version 7.6.0.0228, device version OpenCL 1.2 (Build 0)) 21-Aug-2019 16:48:32 [---] Host name: Falcon 21-Aug-2019 16:48:32 [---] Processor: 4 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Pentium(R) Silver J5005 CPU @ 1.50GHz [Family 6 Model 122 Stepping 1] 21-Aug-2019 16:48:32 [---] Processor features: fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss htt tm pni ssse3 cx16 sse4_1 sse4_2 movebe popcnt aes rdrandsyscall nx lm vmx tm2 pbe fsgsbase smep 21-Aug-2019 16:48:32 [---] OS: Microsoft Windows 10: Core x64 Edition, (10.00.18362.00) 21-Aug-2019 16:48:32 [---] Memory: 7.83 GB physical, 9.08 GB virtual 21-Aug-2019 16:48:32 [---] Disk: 237.38 GB total, 19.24 GB free 21-Aug-2019 16:48:32 [---] Local time is UTC -5 hours 21-Aug-2019 16:48:32 [---] No WSL found. 21-Aug-2019 16:48:32 [---] Last benchmark was 18129 days 21:48:32 ago 21-Aug-2019 16:48:37 [---] No general preferences found - using defaults 21-Aug-2019 16:48:37 [---] Preferences: 21-Aug-2019 16:48:37 [---] max memory usage when active: 4006.48 MB 21-Aug-2019 16:48:37 [---] max memory usage when idle: 7211.67 MB 21-Aug-2019 16:48:37 [---] max disk usage: 19.14 GB 21-Aug-2019 16:48:37 [---] don't use GPU while active 21-Aug-2019 16:48:37 [---] suspend work if non-BOINC CPU load exceeds 25% 21-Aug-2019 16:48:37 [---] (to change preferences, visit a project web site or select Preferences in the Manager) 21-Aug-2019 16:48:37 [---] Setting up project and slot directories 21-Aug-2019 16:48:37 [---] Checking active tasks 21-Aug-2019 16:48:37 [---] Setting up GUI RPC socket 21-Aug-2019 16:48:37 [---] Checking presence of 0 project files 21-Aug-2019 16:48:37 [---] This computer is not attached to any projects 21-Aug-2019 16:48:37 Initialization completed 21-Aug-2019 16:48:37 [---] Suspending GPU computation - computer is in use ![]()

Did you try a reboot? Also can you check in the data directory and see if there is anything in stderrdae.txt.
Thanks, armstrdj |

Based on your description, I would think the reason the MGR can't connect to the client is because boinc.exe isn't running. That might also be why nothing shows up in the project list. I'm assuming you are referring to the list of projects you can attach to and not the list of projects you are already attached to as your log states you aren't attached to anything. I would try to open a terminal window and type: boinc.exe at the prompt and see what messages are displayed. If it says it can't find boinc.exe use the full path name to the exe. It may also help to add --dir C:\ProgramData\BOINC to the command so it can find the data directory.

Hello, Gave this a shot, and I got the exact same log as before, just with later timestamps and the output appearing in the terminal window. However the mgr still doesn't appear to be able to connect. The system tray icon is claiming that it is either not connected to a client or is reconnecting, but doesn't appear to actually be able to connect, even with a reboot, and the project list I am referring to is indeed the first one that pops up upon installation, which is repeatedly displayed when I reboot since I am not picking a project and am unable. Even entering the URL is giving me an error - this project might not have work available. Click yes and then I get there was a problem and to try again later. I have internet, I don't have any firewalls running. No other log files are being modified - stderrdae and stderrgpudetect have 0 bits of data in them. The only thing stdoutgpudetect has is 22-Aug-2019 17:06:38 [---] cc_config.xml not found - using defaults. Anything else I should check? This is really baffling. It would be very unfortunate if I end up having to format this machine just for this.

If you start boinc.exe in a terminal window, the program should not end until you end it with a command. boinc.exe should remain active. If you run boinc.exe in a terminal window and it then puts out messages and ends, that shouldn't happen. It's been my experience, that if the boinc.exe ends, it normally writes some sort of an error message. Otherwise, it remains running. Have you looked at the data directory to see if there is anything in it? It doesn't seem that it does because the client can't find cc_config.xml, any preferences, etc. Is there an all_projects_list.xml file in the data directory? That's the file that has the projects list in it. If not, the installation might be loading data to another directory other than the one the client is pointing to. Long time ago, there was a rare problem where another program would grab the port that boinc uses and the mgr and client couldn't communicate. I think the first thing is to determine why boinc.exe doesn't stay running.

Anything else I should check? This is really baffling. It would be very unfortunate if I end up having to format this machine just for this. I had a similar problem. I was trying to connect with boincmanager to a windows 10 computer over the network. I poked a hole in the windows firewall for port 31416, but I could not connect. I turns out that I also needed to poke a hole in McAfee antivirus -- because McAfee has its own firewall .[Edit 1 times, last edit by thepeacemaker7 at Aug 23, 2019 2:52:37 AM] |

Wolfman1360,
Did you try Doneske's suggestion of starting boinc.exe in a terminal window? Please try that and let us know what is output and if it continues to run or not. Thanks, armstrdj |

I found this problem (#3199) in the BOINC Git. Are you running that version of Windows? Still being diagnosed.
BOINC does not run on a fresh new install on Win 10 1809. Attempting to run BOINC.exe with cmd to get error message, I've got none. Try attaching to a project (e.g. WCG) via the command line.
----------------------------------------boinc --attach_project <URL> <key> If that doesn't work, then uninstall, reboot, reinstall.

Wolfman1360, Did you try Doneske's suggestion of starting boinc.exe in a terminal window? Please try that and let us know what is output and if it continues to run or not. Thanks, armstrdj Hello, Yes, I did try the above suggestion. My response is quoted below. The only thing stdoutgpudetect has is 22-Aug-2019 17:06:38 [---] cc_config.xml not found - using defaults. I have no error messages in the output. It just displays the log file that I posted earlier. It does still have Windows 10 1809, so perhaps I will update it to 1903 and / or try reformatting it, since there is nothing of great value on it. That also has a similar processor, too.
