Quick update for everyone's interest.
----------------------------------------I have absolutely no idea what I was thinking last night (after a few beers, as it happens). I reset Windows, since I have hardly anything installed on this anyway. Attempted the Boinc installation first thing just in case and, as before, got the same - though the very first time it ran I ended up getting a list of projects. It wasn't long after, however, that a dialogue popped up claiming that the client had crashed 3 times in less than 60 seconds and asking me if I wanted to restart it again. Frustrated, I uninstalled boinc, giving it up as a lost cause, before inspiration struck, or maybe it was the alcohol! Either way, I went on over to the WCG downloads page, which I have never used, and selected windows. ...and, right now, it's churning away at MCM and other such wonderful things. So I'm very glad it's working, but was this a 32 bit vs. 64 bit issue? As from my understanding, the WCG agent uses 32 bit versions of boinc? Can I attach other projects using this version or is it for WCG only? I have never seen this before and hope to never again...

That's weird, there should be a 64-bit build of the WCG custom client, not just the 32-bit. I wouldn't tolerate installing 32-bit on a 64-bit device, personally. You're shooting yourself in the foot, and in my experience, the 32-bit application binaries run a bit slower than the 64-bit application binaries on the same system.

I can't think of a reason why the 32bit version of the client would run but not the 64bit version especially if they are the same version. For the client/manager component 32 vs 64 bit has no significance and you should be able to connect to any BOINC projects you want to with the 32 bit version. Even with the 32 bit client version you will still be able to run the 64 bit research application version if there is one available. Thanks, armstrdj |

Hello, The boinc folder is now residing in Program files (x86). The options I had for downloading the custom client were simply Windows, Mac, and variations on linux. Am I missing something? Is there a 64 bit build?

On the World Community Grid website there is only a 32 bit build but the 32 bit client will run the 64 bit version of the research application if there is one available for the projects you have selected.
Thanks, armstrdj |
