Been looking around to see if (1) the Microbiome project can utilize a GPU and if so (2) what is the best GPU for this project?
I'd like to get a decent GPU for my somewhat average PC, assuming one exists that this project can utilize. Current PC is running Windows 10, Intel Celeron G3930, 4 GB RAM. |

No WCG projects works with GPUs currently.

So just to confirm, all WCG project use only the CPU? Really??

Some kids of calculations run best on CPU and others on GPU. Within the World Community Grid, there has only been 1 project that ran on GPU. Many people, including myself, have requested GPU support but the science currently being investigated only runs on CPUs at this time.

Thanks. So what kind of rig was used to earn all those badges?

No single rig, I rented servers when I could afford it, especially when a project was ending. And I kept utilizing whatever machines people didn't want. 40% of the current output is from a server, another 40% from the desktops I made for me and the Mrs. And the last from my work machine and a few laptops.

So just to confirm, all WCG project use only the CPU? Really?? Yes, really. Yes, unfortunatelly... but it could be change in the future, if appear projects candidates to run over GPU's and CPU's. I think that it's a question ever explored by WCG staff when talk with researchers in all projects, new ones or olds... but some work need be made before start, and I think that it's a challenge ever, and aren't easy ways to do it. So, some experienced crunchers or staff team members or commuity advisors with more knowledgement about, could help us with a little bit more information... ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by giba at May 14, 2019 9:56:58 PM] |

Which begs the question - how valuable is distributed processing to the Microbiome Immunity project?
If it is valuable, you'd think someone would invest the time & resources to accommodate GPU processing (assuming GPU processing provides an order of magnitude beyond traditional CPU processing). |

Well, it is a distributed processing project. So it might be a wee bit important. Not all computing tasks benefit from GPU processing so the assumption that it provides an order of magnitude beyond CPU processing may be invalid. I don't know. I don't think the people managing the project are idiots though. Certainly they are aware of the benefits of GPU computing and they likely have data available to assess whether it is worth it to go that route. I guess the CPU only model works well for them. You can't please everybody. |
