Windows Boinc client using smartphone connection

Hello,
I work for a compagny which does not allow boinc connection.
I can get workunits but I cannot send them.
So I use another computer which has an full internet connection to send tasks of the first one because this second computer is on another AD system.
But in few months the computer which has full internet connection will not be available.
So I am thinking some work around in order to get/set workunits on the computer that I will have to use.

I know that I can share and use my smartphone's internet connection with Windows (because the computer is using Windows 10). But what I want (but I don't think that is possible), is the use my smarphone internet connection on with the boinc manager not for all the others applications.
Do you know if it is possible and if yes how to do that ?

Many thanks

Best Regards,

Wilgard

Re: Windows Boinc client using smartphone connection

I guess you could use the smartphone connection once or twice a day to receive and send new workunits.

You can do it, but still you need to setup the connection...if you use iPhone, then you need to install iTunes for drivers...that would work just fine.
With Android phones, I'm sure someone other can help out.

But if the BOINC is blocked on Windows firewall, there's simply no help at all. ;)

Re: Windows Boinc client using smartphone connection

UPDATE:
After install of iTunes & connecting through iPhone to internet, ported-BOINC has downloaded all WU. Now, ported-BOINC is working on its own, over firms proxy. So don't want to change anything, as it works. wink

Re: Windows Boinc client using smartphone connection

I have done this before with my Android phone. Go to Settings --> Connections --> Mobile Hotspot and Tethering. Turn on USB Tethering. Connect the phone to a USB port on the computer. And that's it. Depending on the Android version the steps may differ slightly.

Re: Windows Boinc client using smartphone connection

I would just remind anyone having to use smartphone connections to get/return WU while at work to make sure they have permission to run BOINC on their company equipment otherwise it might be seen that you are trying to circumvent whatever restrictions might be in place at your work. Something which is not taken lightly these days.

Echo @Steve W's advice to be careful not to do something to put either your company or your job at risk. It's not worth it.

That said, if this is a company laptop, you can simply set the Network Daily Schedule to only connect in the evening/overnight when you are at home, and your company laptop will use your home Internet connection.
