Re: Many invalid results - Follow Up

Hi,
I've just replaced this week-end one of my old Athlon II x4 with a new Ryzen 2700:
- New ASUS board, with the lastest firmware
- New CPU, no OC
- New RAM (16 GB)
- New HDD
- New (and good) ventilators (no over heating)
- Fresh and updated installation of Ubuntu 18.04.2 x64

Everything should be fine ... excepted that all (Zika) results are declared invalid by the validator, the rest is pending.
No error, just invalid !!!
It is very disappointing, in particular because the second Athlon II x4 should be replaced as well with the same configuration.
Slowly I have the feeling that WCG does like me any more.
I would like to understand how the Zika validator works. The same WU computed by a wingman with exactly the same OS and library configuration (same version) is OK but not on my machine, why?
Several times I did report in the past such validation problems, in particular on Athlon II. However, in this new case everything is new and supposed to run well.

Maybe kann someone of the TechTeam provide some answer (or contact me directly).
Cheers,
Yves

The concerned machine is: kerhst11
Currently the host is only for OpenZika.

Re: Many invalid results

I get an invalid every few weeks on my Ryzen 1700 running Ubuntu 18.04.
I think it is a Linux thing. They seem to usually complete on the Windows machines.

But a whole lot means either a bad batch, or a hardware problem. I assume you are not overclocking.

Re: Many invalid results

I run between 600 to 800 Zika work units per day on various flavors of Linux MInt (an Ubuntu based variant) for over a year and have seen only an occasional invalid, may 2 or 3. You could try an older version of Linux perhaps. What do the result logs say ? Any clues in there ? Maybe try running just 1 at a time and see if that will give you a valid. Other than that I don't have any suggestions.

Re: Many invalid results

There is definitively a Zika validator problem.
After more than 200 invalid Zika WU's on my new Ryzen 2700 machine, I switched it on MIP1 and MCM for the last day: there is no invalid MCM and MIP1 results, just valid or pending.
Ergo, there is no reason for 100% invalid Zika results !!!
Please TechTeam, could you verify what is going on with the Zika validator, in particular on AMD based Linux machines?
In advance, I thank you.
Yves

Re: Many invalid results

Well, if you are getting valid results in 2 of the projects, that pretty much rules out a bad cpu. I seem to recall Paul D. got one when he first did his own build and it was replaced for him. You may be on the right track with the bad validator theory.
Cheers

Re: Many invalid results

I am currently running Zika, MCM, MIP and TB on a Ryzen 1700. I haven't had a bad Zika for over a week, which is as far as my log shows. Beyond that maybe one only occasionally as I posted above.

What OS are you using? I am on Ubuntu 18.04. It sometimes helps to update to the latest Linux kernel by the way, as I have found on other projects. Or maybe Zika doesn't like being run by itself; I always have others running with it. But whatever it is, I don't think it is the validator either, or we would be seeing many more complaints.

Re: Many invalid results

Hi,
as previously mentioned, updated Ubuntu 18.04.2 x64, no over-clocking, WCG only.

Since the end of OET, my machines are only on Zika, excepted one Windows 7 on MCM.
I already noticed in the past some troubles with Zika on one other machine (Athlon II x4) but never 100% invalid.
I do not have any troubles on the 2 Phenom II x6 machines.
The problem with invalid results is that we do not know why it is invalid (criteria, discrepancies, ...).
In case of computation error, we can see some information in the log, not for invalid results since it happens only on validator (WCG) side.
However, since the machine is operating well, even with MIP1, I cannot imagine that the invalid result problem is caused by the machine it-self.
I will try to launch the second Ryzen 2700 machine during the coming week-end (replacing my last Athlon II x4) and we will see.
Cheers,
Yves

Re: Many invalid results

@Kersamson,

The machine that was getting the invalids, did it start due to having to compare against another machine? Or was the first invalid due to a zero redundancy workunit?

I looked into the other hosts associated with one of the results marked invalid. It was compared against other Ryzen 7 processors, with one being on a similar OS version.

When looking at your result in here, your answers were different by quite a large variance. I wonder if you have a memory issue on that machine causing these issues.

You can see the variance between your result and the canonical result.

414686987 414686987

1 -6.6 0.000 0.000 1 -6.6 0.000 0.000
2 -6.2 3.440 6.565 | 2 -5.9 2.136 3.378
3 -5.9 2.573 3.712 | 3 -5.7 2.539 3.596
4 -5.9 1.534 2.304 | 4 -5.7 3.338 4.707
5 -5.8 2.611 6.962 | 5 -5.7 4.317 6.243
6 -5.7 3.329 4.686 | 6 -5.6 4.563 8.044
7 -5.7 4.530 8.050 | 7 -5.6 9.798 12.956
8 -5.7 4.750 7.321 | 8 -5.6 3.169 3.782
9 -5.6 11.375 14.060 | 9 -5.5 2.603 7.121

To be considered valid between two machines, they have to match binary.

Thanks,

Re: Many invalid results

Hi Keith,
I thank you for your first feedback. It seems that my second upgraded machine (from Athlon II to Ryzen 2700) is able to return valid results (same hardware configuration, but LinuxMint 19.1 instead of Ubuntu 18.04). I've just switched it to OpenZika only and I will follow it.
Regarding your remark about possible memory problem, I will make some tests as soon as I will be back (I'm currently business traveling). However, this host did not fail any memory checks and send back valid results for MCM and MIP1.
I will in all cases provide additional feedback next week.
Regards,
Yves
---
Additional remark (I've just noticed it):
- The machine with invalid Zika results overclaims credits systematically (at least x3) and needs twice the time per WU than the second Ryzen 2700 machine with valid Zika results.
