Hi! I've been a huge supporter of WCG but it dawned on me that although WCG does not support GPU crunhcing, other BOINC projects like Seti At Home do support GPU.
----------------------------------------Is there a way for me to run both Projects 24x7 and allow WCG to use the CPU while SAH is forced to only use the GPU? This way I can run both projects at the same time instead of having BOINC switch between them every X minutes. I'm on Windows 10 and BOINC is currently at 7.2.47 (yes old, but it runs like a champ and I have seen no performance/bug reason for me to upgrade BOINC but I am all ears if I missed something). Also, what kind of performance should I expect from an NVIDIA Quadro M1000M. It seems to only be running 1 SAH task at once (I suspended WCG while testing). Maybe I should upgrade BOINC? I cannot attach a screenshot in this forum and have no way of hosting it online but the 2 Tasks say: Running (0.147 CPUS + 1 NVIDIA GPU) and Running (0.00628 CPUs + 1 intel_gpu GPU) which seems to tell me 1 Task is being run on the NVIDIA card and 1 task on the integrated Intel GPU that is on the motherboard. The NVIDIA is set to take about 1 hour to complete while the Intel almost 2 hours. My CPU is the Intel i7-6820HQ. For this relatively high end machine of early 2018, the performance is not stunning for SAH. Maybe SAH has significantly increased the complexity of the searching compared to 2010 when I left SAH and put my efforts into WCG. Or maybe BOINC needs an upgrade to take better advantage of the video cards on this laptop. Thanks in advance! ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by ericinboston at Feb 4, 2019 11:40:12 PM] |

That's exactly what BOINC is for. I do that all the time.
----------------------------------------You may want to try some of the shorter BOINC GPU WUs, e.g. Einstein@home, Milkyway@home, Enigma@home or Asteroids@home. ![]() ...KRI please cancel all shadow-banning |

That's exactly what BOINC is for. I do that all the time... Ok...can you tell me how I set Project A to only use CPU and Project B to only use GPU AND have both project run at the same time? In my case I want Seti At Home to only use GPU and WCG to only use CPU. I upgraded to the latest BOINC since posting my original topic and I don't see any mechanism in the Advanced View (which is the View I've been using for 10+ years). Thanks! ![]() |

Go to your Seti account and select Seti@homepreferences.
----------------------------------------On that page deselect the CPU option and select the correct GPU option for your system. and save the settings. The next time your host asks for work from Seti you will only get GPU work ![]() |

SETI has some customer user made apps that crunch much faster than the default app.

The next time your host asks for work from Seti you will only get GPU work I will do this (SAH is down for maintenance right now)...but how would that tell the BOINC client to run both Projects at the same time? The "Switch between tasks..." setting in BOINC explicitly asks for how many minutes to run only 1 Project at a time. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by ericinboston at Feb 5, 2019 6:38:49 PM] |

I disabled the CPU on the "SETI@home preferences" webpage, saved, then Updated Boinc and nothing changed. I then closed Boinc and opened it again and it still uses the CPU.
----------------------------------------I think I'm going to give up on this topic...even if I can get SAH to only use the GPU, there is nothing in the Boinc settings to allow 2 Projects to run simultaneously. Boinc will only run 1 Project, then use the "Switch between tasks" minute setting to swtich to the 2nd Project. EDIT: Well, after a few hours SAH started running only on the GPU *AND* while my WCG works on the CPU. I guess it just took awhile for the settings to propogate...even though I closed/started BOINC a few times on various machines. Thanks for all your help, folks! ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by ericinboston at Feb 6, 2019 3:00:34 AM] |

Asteroid@home & working on same computer is NO GO. Others are better, but S@h is the best. But also was pioneer of that GPU crunching. ![]() |

I'd like to add that my mid 2017 iMac with a Radeon Pro 575 video card crunches SAH units at a rate of 1 per 6 minutes! Holy smokes! The computer would return about 240 Work Units every day! The i7 CPU on that iMac crunches at about 1 per 4 hours so the video card is 40x faster than the i7.
----------------------------------------It's too bad WCG never adopted GPU technology. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by ericinboston at Feb 6, 2019 8:32:17 PM] |
