Strange disk space error

I get notices that the world community grid projects need more disk space (between 100-500 MB each). But I have over 31 GB of free space on the computer? What do I do?

Re: Strange disk space error

Is that 31Gb on disk where WCG/BOINC data store is?
Also check your profile for below Disk Usage settings which may limit allowed usage:
Use no more than: x Gigabytes of disk space
Leave at least: y Gigabytes of disk space free
Use no more than: z % of total disk space

Re: Strange disk space error

On the WCG website:
MyContribution
My Projects
in the first paragraph select Device manager
click the Selected Profile shown to right of the device in question
scroll down to Advanced Options section Disk Usage.

These may be overridden in BOINC manager:
Tools
Computing preferences
disk and memory usage

Re: Strange disk space error

I doubled the space that each project is allowed to use and no of the other metrics is even close to hitting the ceiling. Tried restarting the manager and update the project. Are still getting the same notices.

Re: Strange disk space error

Check the disk tab in BOINC manager to see how much space BOINC thinks it has and how much each project has used.

Re: Strange disk space error

I just want to check that there's no confusion ...

If you change any settings in BOINC Manager (the program that runs on your machine to control all the Work Units -- look in Options -> Computing preferences.. and select the "Disk and memory" tab), those will be the ones used, not the ones on the web site.

Be careful the way you use the word "project". There are many BOINC projects, WCG being just one of them. WCG in turn runs several different science projects. Each of the science projects tends to have different needs, so make sure you cover the worst case, preferably with a decent overhead to cope with the odd rogue work unit that needs more. Having a large work buffer will also use more disk space. But unless you're very constrained, give it plenty: it will only use what it needs.

If you're running more than one BOINC project and you haven't set anything in BOINC Manager, then I believe that it's the most recently updated project web site settings that are used, but I may have that wrong. I think it's safer to always set things in BOINC Manager, even though I only run WCG. The only thing I use the WCG web site settings page for is to choose which science projects to run. However, don't forget that there are four different device profiles: Default, school, work and home. Make sure that your device is running the profile you think it is. Look at https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/device/viewDevices.do.

Yes, the "Disk" tab in BOINC Manager will tell you what the current actual usage is, by BOINC Project, and how much is free for BOINC to use.

Hope that helps!

Re: Strange disk space error

All under that tab:

"used by BIONIC" 13,17 GB
free, not available to BIONIC 31,75 GB
Used by other programs 73,32 GB

Disk usage by BIONIC projects
World Community Grid 731,93 MB
