Why does agent require me to logon every once in a while?

Subject pretty much says it all.... I have several devices running under the same user name. Some of the devices seem to run with no problem, but others (including the one on my primary installation) seem to ask me to logon occasionally.

Is there any configuration point I'm missing that will prevent me from having to keep logging on? Some of my secondary installations are in a shared user environment and those machines I don't really pay attention to. So they could be not producing results because they are waiting for me to logon and I'm not aware of that fact.

Check your device manager to see whether there are any duplicate device names. That can cause problems. Change the picklist to all devices ever registered or all devices ever sending, to make sure it picks up all of the old names.

Change one of the duplicates to something else. If I'm not using them any more, I change mine to OLD ____ whatever.

Re: Why does agent require me to logon every once in a while?

OK Thanks. I have my windows XP machine set up with mulitple users, so when each user logs in, they run an instance of WCG, but they are all the same Device name. If I rename them to something unique I should be all set?

Re: Why does agent require me to logon every once in a while?

If you have several users signing on to the machines, the best solution might be to run the World Community Grid as a service. The only downside to it is that you do not get to see the agent or the icon in the System Tray. Instructions for setting it up as a service are available at the "Extraordinarily Unofficial World Community Grid User Website".

Best regards,

Re: Why does agent require me to logon every once in a while?

If you have several users on the machine, each of which has their own agent installation, then first, check to make sure they were all installed in unique directories. Furthermore, you won't be able to run two or more of them simultaneously.

It is better to run just one agent all the time, rather than having multiple users each running a different instance once in a while. This is likely to make the work units time out before they finish.

An alternative to running an agent as a service, some users have had success using Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Scheduled Tasks to create a task that runs ud.exe all the time under the one user, who installed the agent, regardless of who is logged on. The agent should then be removed from the Startup folder for that user. The only problem is that this will not show the screen saver image for any of the users and won't provide an icon in the system tray for checking on the agent. However, you could disable the scheduled task once in a while and then check on the agent using the install id and running ud.exe manually.

Re: Why does agent require me to logon every once in a while?

I decided to set it up as an agent using the Scheduled Tasks... seemed a lot easier than running as a service. I was a little disappointed that you no longer have a tray icon to check the status, but I discovered that if you have WCG set as your screensaver (as I do), you can go to display properties, and preview the SS. It gives you the percentage complete for that task. I would assume (maybe wrongly) that if there was some problem preventing it from running, this method will hopefully give you a clue.

If you see the project graphics, then it is computing properly. The only time the graphics will turn into just the logo for World Community Grid is while the agent is returning results, getting new work, or paused.
