Thanks guys. I would love to use linux on all my systems and I do actually use mint on 2 (soon to be 3) of them.
But yes, for this situation I can only use windows 7 or 10 because I have some educational software in Japanese that has been written specifically for windows. Seems like windows 7 is the preferred one. KLik, do you have any data to show the difference between 7 and 10? Although this is a dedicated cruncher, I do use it a lot in the evenings when I am back from work. So it does need to earn it's keep. |

Why wold you use WINE to run BOINC on Linux? BOINC has very good support for Linux, in fact running tasks natively under Linux is 5-20% faster than running them under Windows... The reason WINE might be used is to use his Japanese written software under Linux. Cheers

Hi
----------------------------------------Running windows 10 here and I haven't had updates take over my machines and restart them, yet. Keep in mind windows 10 pro will also let you tell it when you want to install etc and you can also tell the updates to get lost for a certain amount of time (90 days)? Also, linux only crunches better on certain projects but not all. I can't use linux on my main machine for a variety of reasons - most notably orca (which is the screen reader for the blind on linux) is simply a horrible experience that nobody has, to my knowledge, updated in years. At least the documentation. I have linux on a few machines here that are dedicated crunchers and have them set to crunch the projects that have a linux advantage - but apart from that.

Thanks for the replies guys.
This has opened up a can of worms for me now. At the end of this, the vast majority of my crunching power will come from 3 machines running Linux (168 threads on linux vs 86 on windows). I like the idea of running linux on this new machine and running wine, but in all honesty, I don't want to work with something that has compromises and requires me to problem solve here and there. I regularly use Microsoft Office, utorrent, Firefox and Skype, along with aforementioned Japanese software. I also have to regularly type in Japanese. Now, if I can run wine and get a smooth experience with the above, I am willing to try to use it. Especially if boinc will br running under linux and giving some projects a boost. As users of Wine, is that your experience? Also wolfman1360, do you never have the automatic restarts? I thought that was a feature of Win 10! Because then I would be much happier using it and know that I am going to get updates for the foreseable future. |

Win 7. Not a technical answer, just preferences.
----------------------------------------I have a Win 7 desktop that I'm using now. My work laptop is Win 10. |

On my side, definitively Linux.
----------------------------------------I have still one Windows 7 host. In a close future, I will have only Linux hosts and some Windows 7 virtual machines for "legacy" windows applications. Regarding Doneske's comment, he mentioned that he tried to run BoincTasks in Wine, not boinc tasks. Cheers, Yves |

Perhaps I'm late on this, but.
----------------------------------------Despite the recent Intel and AMD software glitches, wouldn't running linux in a virtual machine still get results sent out at least a little quicker in boinc? Sure, it wouldn't be as quick as a dedicated linux machine but it's better than nothing, no? This way nobody is compromising anything as that's my problem, too. Also the above mentioned screen reader issues, but that's beside the point..
