So for me reaching 100 years in my lifespan is an unfortunate OCD (also tolerable is if my machines run post postmortem and hit 100). I know its supposed to be passive crunching, but I can't not pay attention: or fret about the process. Its endless progress audits until the goal is met.
----------------------------------------I propose we integrate cloud services (Like A**zon, G**G, Micro***T, and A**ole scalable servers etc) with optimal virtual machines (on a per project basis), so that I can just pay you (x) to attain (x) units of processing time. You send the instructions, and optimal server cluster of any flavor, runs optimal virtual machines for my parameters. Instead of being device reliant I want to pay a DEDICATED server (audited by the Institutional vendor) for the results I want; while passively computing also. I'm still going to passively crunch; but inconsistent progress for consistent effort drives me nuts: Hence: "Id rather pay to be done with this". Server shutdowns asphyxiate my ambition. I'm gonna do this; but can we make it faster for the sake of faster? Please advise :D [Edit 1 times, last edit by Shinobi Gaiden at Feb 23, 2018 4:05:22 AM] |

I rented shared space on some virtual machines and that didn't go well. I didn't realize that those threads were shared access and I got booted for using it 24/7 :P That post is here (link). I was schooled a bit and people in that thread recommended Wholesale Internet, Digital Ocean, and http://www.online.net/en/dedicated-server/dedibox-xc
----------------------------------------Kimsufi.com and wholesaleinternet.net were mentioned in this thread (link). I pay like $60 USD a month for a dedicated machine to run 32 threads 24/7 for me via http://www.wholesaleinternet.net/dedicated as they were recommended to me at the thread above. My biggest complaint is that on their order page, in stock items have a blue "order now" button and out of stock items have a red "order now" button. That'd make me really upset if I was red/green colorblind. I'm just paying for one dedicated machine now but for a period of time was paying for multiple in order to get me some badges before certain projects ended. That and I'm a bit OCD and it was fun to see the numbers go up so fast, lol. Edit: I did the free virtual machine trials and enjoyed it, but to get the numbers I wanted I'd have to pay more than I was willing to. I also found some companies rent access to dedicated machine at prices I am unwilling to pay. I'm happy with what I eventually got and it gives me basically one month of run time on a daily basis, so one run time year in roughly two solar weeks. The math scales up nicely from there. What operating system/version are you running on the dedicated servers you're using for running WCG? Thanks.

I remember selecting a semi recent version of Linux but I forgot the specifics as I installed it a year + ago. Going to the Workunit Status page I am using 4.8.0-59-generic. Not sure if that helps.

Then, lets see your stats here: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/stat/viewM...userName=Shinobi%20Gaiden So you're at a 60y...need 40y more! & doing around 4+ days per day...so keeping your computers alive, will get you there in 10y time. So the main thing is: how much time do you think you have? |

I can recommend hetzner, kimsufi and soyoustart (the latter two are essentially the same company).
----------------------------------------I have a hetzner server that I use for crunching although it is soon going to be retired for a older (and cheaper) kimsufi.
Crunching for the betterment of human kind and the canines who will always be our best friends.

@Shinobi Gaiden, it looks like you're wanting a turnkey, "Crunching as a Service" option in cloud computing. So while there's already virtual machines and physical machines you can rent (you identified many of the top providers), you're looking for one that already has BOINC installed, and you just need it more turnkey based on your 1) budget, and 2) desired processing power goals.
----------------------------------------How much are you willing to spend? There's already lots of cloud services that offer dedicated CPU or GPU crunching time at a considerable cost, but I imagine it would cost even more to have a BOINC image ready-to-go. I guess this would take a nice spreadsheet to run the numbers, but I bet it would be cheaper to just build your own machine(s) and run them either at home (paying for electricity) or in a Co-Lo that includes electricity in the rental fee. Personally? I'm not currently a homeowner, but I dream of someday having some nice property with lots of solar panels, wind turbines -- maybe water if there is a stream on the property -- and a huge battery bank to be 100% self-sufficient. If my home "datacenter" needs 10,000 Watts or 50,000 Watts, I hope to be able to generate that on-site.

Good day Shinobi Gaiden,
We may have a solution for you. We are in the backup business: www.datatosecure.com, and we are expanding in the Virtual Private Servers and Dedicated Servers sphere via www.d2s.cloud, this web site is under development, but we have been in a data centre for many years. Please have a look. Regards François |

Shout out for Digital Ocean. I've used VMs in all three of the big public clouds and DO is a clear winner for BOINC. The cost for a small VM is less than the equivalent mains power for a PC. DO is cheaper than Amazon spot instances, but with much better performance. It is also the easiest cloud to use, although obviously you will need some basic networking and Linux knowledge for any cloud instance.
I am not affiliated to DO - just a happy customer. |

Maybe I should buy some Thread Ripper 2990x's and rent them out. |
