WCG on MS Azure cloud with 50$ credit

Hello guys,

I got a 50$ credit for MS Azure clod per month and I got an idea to use it for running the WCG client from current projects probably MCM and HIP.

Has anyone any experience with it?
If it is even worth to run it with such credit?
If yes which machine tier should I choose and what OS (Win/Lin) is recommended i.e. has a better performance?

Thank you for your tips and ideas,
Peter

Re: WCG on MS Azure cloud with 50$ credit

I've tried AWS and Google free trial period before and had setup a FAH client on it. At least then the Google service had much better CPU performance.

Linux and the most CPU cores you can get would be my suggestion. WCG is not heavy on RAM/disk so getting a VM with a lot of memory/storage wouldn't be worth the funding.

Re: WCG on MS Azure cloud with 50$ credit

The problem I've found with using large companies like Amazon and such is that they tend to price everything on volume. You can't know what it's going to cost in a given month. Azure has good hardware for crunching but their tutorials are poorly organized and they only begin to come close to being cost competitive if you commit to a three year term and pay up front. There are other companies you can use that charge as little as $5 a month for a server. You want to run Linux too. If you run a Windows box, you have to pay extra so M$ gets their license fee. Most projects also run faster on Linux. Ubuntu is the flavor I prefer. Any server you get should have a Xeon CPU at a minimum.
