Here's what was going on 250 Years ago Joseph Black, a Scottish chemist, discovered carbon dioxide in about 1754. Prior to Black’s discovery, it had been thought that there were no other gases apart from air, hence his adoption of the term “fixed air” for carbon dioxide. As Professor of Chemistry at the University of Edinburgh in around 1761 Black discovered the phenomenon of latent heat, and three years later he measured the latent heat of steam. His pupil and assistant James Watt later put these discoveries to practical use when he made improvements to the early steam engine. (No not only did he discover the Green House Gas he also encouraged the development of the Steam Engine - oh the irony) ![]() |

Samuel Johnson published his "Dictionary of the English Language" the first of it's kind.
----------------------------------------If you have read any of my threads you will know that I haven't read Mr Johnson's work as I'm a gramatically challenged Northerner from the County of Yorkshire in the North of England. Why you may ask am I living on the South Coast then? Answer : Because it's about 3 degree's warmer It's grim up t'North![]() |

Hit a year of crunching sometime last week and didn't even notice. Time flies when you're having fun.
----------------------------------------My two daughters are going to force me to get more machines if I want one for myself because for some reason the IM is always running when they are home. At least to get them to come downstairs for dinner is easier - just login and send them a message to come down versus the old standby of yelling up the stairs I was long ago trained not to upset the two princesses.[Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Oct 22, 2005 10:06:40 PM] |

It's a funny old world. The sad thing is that this is now very true.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1755_Lisbon_earthquake A disturbingly familiar story from 250 Years ago. Ecclesiastes was right "There is nothing new under the Sun" Dave -- When I visited Lisbon a few years ago, someone pointed to a hill and said that it was the mound of debris from that earthquake. Another item for your chronology of 1755. Here (in the then colonies) the French and Indian War started. A colonial gained the rank of colonel when he undertook a mission for the governor of the colony of Virginia and took a message to the French commander on the Ohio river ordering the French out. The reply, of course, was negative and initiated the war. The colonial militiaman that was promoted to colonel later commanded troops during the American Revolution -- a lot of them in fact. His name was George Washington. -- Dave |

Dave --
----------------------------------------Today a record was set. The next tropical storm has formed west-southwest of Puerto Rico. The old record for named storms was 21 (I think set in 1932). Since five letters are left out of the alphabet in the storm name list, we have run out of names for the storms and have gone into the backup of using the Greek alphabet. Today, tropical storm Alpha was named. Quote from the PM advisory from the National Hurricane Center: ...ALPHA BECOMES THE TWENTY-SECOND NAMED STORM OF THE SEASON AND BREAKS THE ALL-TIME RECORD FOR THE MOST ACTIVE SEASON ON RECORD...
