All Intel processors from the last ten years are about to get slower in order to fix a major security hole. Possibly much slower; enough to impact World Community Grid. It's a hardware issue, and the software fixes for each operating system are incoming. Paper quotes source saying best case scenario involves a 17% slowdown. There is presently an embargoed security bug impacting apparently all contemporary [Intel] CPU architectures that implement virtual memory, requiring hardware changes to fully resolve. Urgent development of a software mitigation is being done in the open and recently landed in the Linux kernel, and a similar mitigation began appearing in NT kernels in November. In the worst case the software fix causes huge slowdowns in typical workloads. |

Update, 10:56 PM - 1/2/18 - As it turns out, apparently the Linux patch that is being rolled out is for ALL x86 processors including AMD, and the Linux mainline kernel will treat AMD processors as insecure as well. As a result, AMD CPUs will feel a performance hit as well, though the bug only technically affects Intel CPUs and AMD recommends specifically not to enable the patch for Linux. How Microsoft specifically will address the issue with the Windows operating system remains unclear until the company's formal Patch Tuesday update is made known, hopefully soon. |

The patches probably will have little effect on the type of programs run at distributed computing sites like WCG.
The patches slow down OS/kernel calls made by programs. The types of programs run here are almost 100% CPU bound -- meaning they're not making any OS/Kernel calls at all. The effect on this type of computing will hopefully not even be noticeable. GPU apps (relevant for other BOINC sites that have them), do make lots of OS/kernel calls, but most of the processing is usually done on the GPU, so hopefully the effect will be minimal there as well. I certainly would not worry about how it's going to affect distributed computing performance, at least not yet. The outlook may change as more information is available, but for now I'm not concerned about the impact on WCG. |

I wonder how this will effect the big guys like amazon and the like with their virtualization? My poor Transformer book t100. Hopefully it isn't 30% - might as well call the poor thing a core solo with hyperthreading at that point.

Google says its systems have been updated to defend against Meltdown https://security.googleblog.com/2018/01/today...bility-what-you-need.html …. Microsoft issued an emergency update today. Amazon said it protected AWS customers running Amazon's tailored Linux version, and would roll out the MSFT patch for other customers 2day
