Re: [INTEL] Upcoming Permanant Processor Slowdown?!

Ouch. 40% decrease. I am going to guess there are issues elsewhere in the update.

Re: [INTEL] Upcoming Permanant Processor Slowdown?!

After having updated several Linux machines - Athlon II x4, Phenom II x6, i7 6700K - I cannot observe any noticeable negative performance issue at this time.
Only a longer term observation will provide more accurate figures since the machines are only computing for OET1, in order to ensure the reliability of the observation.
Cheers,
Yves

http://dlvr.it/QCv0Ty @intelhpc - apparently intel do not plan on patching the security bug #meltdown yet - what will that mean to #business? and #broadwell

As of 23/01/2018 Intel patch to CPU has as yet failed to be fully effective against system instability caused by unexpected side effects : https://www.cnet.com/news/intel-stops-some-ch...-reboot-meltdown-spectre/
Further improvements sought, One suggests a better cohesive response between Low Level OS companies like Redhat Linux, Microsoft, apple & android with Hardware developers - interactive people, RS

The newest 4.15 kernel shows 7-9% performance improvement over the unpatched 4.11 linux kerne

"Greg Kroah-Hartman, the Linux kernel maintainer for the stable branch, said he's seen one report of a "Linux user benchmarking recent kernel versions on a specific network-heavy load," which showed that, without anti-Meltdown Linux's Kernel Page Table Isolation (KPTI) patches, the latest-released Linux kernel, 4.15 is 7- to 9-percent faster than April 30, 2017's 4.11 release.

Read also: The Linux vs Meltdown and Spectre battle continues

That's the good news. The bad news is that, with KPTI, 4.14 is 1- to 2-percent slower than 4.11. Still, as Kroah-Hartman pointed out, "So, overall, we are right back where we started from. Which makes me feel good, the recent Meltdown changes turn out to not really be much of a problem overall."

Why WCG showed to have been impacted only multiple days, nearly a week AFTER they did the weekend 'important operating system update' on January 6 https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/about_us/viewNewsArticle.do?articleId=548 was a rather curious development.

Re: [INTEL] Upcoming Permanant Processor Slowdown?!

Just for information:
I experienced last week a curious problem. After updating a laptop running Ubuntu Mate 16.04 x64 on an i7-7700HQ, hyperthreading disappeared without any possibility to reverse the situation, i.e. only 4 cores- 4 threads, instead of 8 threads, confirmed by lscpu.
Unfortunately, the up-to-date UEFi (I hate it) does not have any option regarding hyperthreading.
The updates performed on older machines, in particular i7-6600HQ, i7-6600K and i7-4700K, were OK.
I would be interested to listen if other members did experience a similar situation.
Cheers,
Yves

Had you recently updated the uefi? I don't see how an OS update would make the threads disappear. It is strange that multithreading is not listed in the uefi (I also can't stand uefi and still prefer to run in legacy mode if possible). What does the uefi list? Does it correctly list the processor and core/thread count?

If updating the uefi, or rolling back to a previous version (is that even possible?) does not solve the issue, I would try doing a fresh install of ubuntu/mint/any flavor of linux on a flash drive or something and see what that OS reports.
