Points example or clarification

I'm sure this has been discussed somewhere, deeply buried on these forums but I cannot find the discussion.

Example: If I have 5 computers, all very different CPUs from 2005-present running the same projects within WCG...and all machines run 24x7...all at full 100% CPU utilization...do they all get the same Points? Obviously the faster machines will return more results each day, but will all 5 machines receive/generate the same Points?

My guess is "yes"...because the only difference is the CPUs...the projects are the same and they all run 24x7.

If the answer is no, could someone elaborate a bit?

Thanks!

Re: Points example or clarification

Although points are one of 3 metrics used by WCG there is often very little correlation between points and work done.

You will probably find that cpu's of same generation will receive points commensurate with number of threads and clockspeed so that it can be easier to calculate potential points of a given cpu against a known cpu if all else is the same therefore a 24t machine might get approximately 3/4 points of a 32t machine at same cpu speed on same hardware and operating system BUT due to variance in work issued it is not always so.

Across the hardware generations a number of computational improvements have been made that together with efficiency savings will usually advantage newer equipment.

In general the points sysstem is something of a cluster f........

Other opinions may vary

EDIT: Points per work unit can also be an average of any machine that completed the same work

Re: Points example or clarification

The only thing that would be identical in your situation is the time. Generally speaking, newer cpu's are faster and will process more units. Thus, a faster cpu will produce more points than a slower cpu. The point value of the units within the same project are not not the necessarily the same, but do vary somewhat. The highest consistency of points across units in a project is probably MCM1.
Hope this helps.
Cheers
